I know there are a million threads on this topic, but I'm not finding the info I want.

I just got the EOS-300D and want to buy the 50mm 1.8 as well as a telephoto lens, but I am on a budget. I would love to buy the L series lenses, but will not be able to afford those for a while. What do you recommend to someone on a tight budget.

I'm currently looking at the Canon 75-300mm F4.0-5.6 III. Does anyone have any other suggestions or things they can say about this lens? Does anyone have one?

Thanks in advance.

THIS would be a good budget model telephoto lens for the 300d. Looks like it's the same price as the canon you are looking at though..

I saw that one. It has about the same rating as the Canon. It seems like a good way to get a telephoto and a macro at the same time.Is it not trying to cram too much into such an inexpensive lens though?

The macro capabilities of this telephoto lens are not so great. It takes a little patience and trial and error go get decent shots with it that way. It also is weak if you want any decent amount of depth of field in a macro shot.

You will probably want something a little wider than the 50mm as well. With the 1.6 crop, the 50mm gives the same field of view as an 80mm on a film camera. I have the 50mm 1.4 and love it, but it is not as flexible as 50mm without the crop.

I got the lens that came with the kit. The 18-55, gives me that wider view. It's not very fast, but it's a good travel lens.

I have been looking at getting a few new lenses myself form my D60, and I was looking at the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 APO, but it is an expensive lens compared to the Sigma 70-300 f4.5 @ $149.

I've been searching the web, looking for other advice.

There is a thread at DPReview about these two lenses. They say the focus speed of the Canon is better, but the optics of the Sigma are far better but it is REALLY slow to focus.

Any input from here?

If you're going for the Sigma 70-300 I would recommend spending the extra on the APO version rather than the DL. From everything I've read the optics are far better.

I did a lot of reading on 300mm zooms and went for the Sigma APO in the end, largely based on Adam-T's tests on dpreview. I'm *very* happy with it. This was a 'snap' shot (I literally turned around, focused and shot) from when I first tried it out. The file is straight out of the camera.

As for focus speed, it doesn't seem at all bad to me, but then when you're used to the focus speed on a Fuji 602 anything will seem fast! I'm hoping to be at the track this weekend so that will be the real test.

I noticed that there were 2 models of that lens soon after I posted my last thread. Definitely the APO version is the one that has the better optics. A little more $$$ but still within my pricerange. Whats the best place to buy from online? It's too pricy in Montreal ($399 can$)?!
