We have alot of Amish in and around my community, I have always found them to be super friendly and nice--

I was driving around and this carriage was in front of me, I asked to take a picture and the driver was very nice and agreed-- I know its a horrible photo-- my flash ruined it, but its still relevant to this thread..

I don't have any pictures, but what I find to be so, so sad is that the Amish seem to be such a peaceful people. Whilst I may not agree everything they do, this is doubly tragic, IMO, because they try so hard to hold on to their culture in a world that is obviously closing in around them.

Growing up in an area with a lot of Amish folks, I have to admit we've poked some fun at them over the years, but I have to admit I have a LOT of respect for these folks. We could certainly learn a lot from them when it comes to dignity and overall ethics.

Thanks! I always feel extra sneaky when trying to photograph these folks. If they see a camera, they'll literally do whatever they can to avoid being photographed. From what I've read, their beliefs are less about the whole "graven images" thing than it is that about "posing" for a photo; they consider that to be calling attention to themselves unnecessarily.

Aside from having to be extra cautious around their slow-moving buggies, I enjoy seeing them when I travel between Pittsburgh and my hometown of Punxsutawney. There are a good number of Amish that live near there, particularly in Smicksburg. That's a neat area with a bunch of Amish shops and so forth. Their woodworking ability is amazing!

A traditional Amish meal is an interesting experience, too!

OK I'm going to hijack quickly then return to your normal channel. But tell me something if you can. One of my all time favorite movies is Groundhog day. Set in Punxsutawny, including the famous Punxsutawney Phil. Have you ever witnessed this event on ground hog day? If so do you have any photos you can share in your portfolio? Thanks

Heh... you've certainly come to the right place for that question! :) I am Phil's official webmaster (www.groundhog.org), and I have photographed every Groundhog Day for more than 20 years. Soooo yes, I know a thing or two about that celebration... and I was even interviewed as a "local expert" on an HGTV program last year!

(There are numerous more shots in my portfolio... end of hijack! :)

.

I don't know; maybe it's me, but color photos of the Amish just don't do it for me. For some reason, black-and-whites set the mood of the Amish (at least in my mind).
