So I'm in the free study with I suppose what could be called an outtake from another challenge, wonder how that will go down with the voters...

It should be interesting voting on Floyd. I know nothing about them so will just assume that all the photos meet the challenge and vote like it's a free study with 1/4 of the normal number of entries :D

Yeah, I do not know too much about them myself. "Meeting the challenge" for me would be if the photo really conveys the title or not.

I have two photos I'm considering for Free Study this month (I'll be back on 22nd to enter). One is b&w, the other color. Totally different subjects and types. What to do...

By the way, despite my DQ in for sale, I'm hoping some of my teammates will comment (thank you much bmartuch!) I felt that something was just a bit "off" about it when I entered (I'm not talking about the black background, the thing for which I got DQ'd) and I was hoping for some insight. Much appreciated!

OK I KNEW it, a starting score of 5.200 just couldn't be true. So here's my Brown score, rocketing down for a brown ribbon...sigh...

Oh, levyj43, I printed out your useful blurb on the noise thing - I now have a version of Photoshop which I think has noise reduction or whatever on it. Will try options 1 and 2, unfortunately option 3 a no-go, just got the Powershot for birthday. However would LOVE to get a DSLR.

Oh yeah, and I did shoot sky with my ol' Samsung, so that's likely why I have so much noise...however I believe I had noise in the originial pic which I did shoot with my Canon. Maybe less. Go figure.

Thank you klstover for my first comment. It was nice by the way.

Well, I managed to find a couple nitpicky things? It was a good portrait really. Selective desat is often used to take attention away from busy backgrounds and maybe your shot would have been good that way (I haven't gotten around to learning how to select or mask things without creating jagged edges yet so I don't peronally use that technique.)

Welcome :-)
Been really fun to comment on them so far. :-D

If you haven't already, be sure and read the Melethia Christmas story in the for sale outtake thread.

skewsme requested original of my For Sale entry. Here is it:

Or, rather, the title should be: don't completely darken a background unless you want a DQ!

Wow this is strange-
6th place with an
average vote of 7.1301

Average Vote per Commenters: 7.853
Average Vote per Users w/ Cameras: 7.113
Average Vote per Users w/out Cameras: 8.667

5th place with an
average vote of 7.1919

Average Vote per Commenters: 8.350
Average Vote per Users w/ Cameras: 7.202
Average Vote per Users w/out Cameras: 6.333

So I must have had a lot less Voters with out Cameras? It is just strange that a 2 pont spread only is .06 but I guess it works out if only 5 or 6 are w/out.

Notice, the scores are 8 2/3 and 6 1/3. You had either 3 or 6 people voting w/o cameras. That's typical.

congrats on getting in the top ten though! it's a great shot. i never know what to think about the voters without cameras. with me it's like they either vote way higher or way lower than voters with cameras. it's almost never even with them.

It's probably because there's so few users without cameras that the results are normally extreme. It seems to be a fairly useless stat really.

When I use selective desat, I usually desat the whole thing in one or two layers, then merge them and put on a mask. Then I paint the color areas with a slightly softened black brush to let the color layer show through. I haven't noticed any jagged edges with that system, and it's quite simple. You probably know that if you go outside the lines with the black brush, you can touch it up by painting with the white brush.

When I went to bed last night this was at 7.0. Maybe there's some chance for improvement before the voting is over.

You haven't entered a challenge since last May?

I rejoined and have an entry in brown right now...working on my next entry for "pattern II"
