I also dropped the ball with chasing butterflies, I kinda got sick last week. But I̢۪m back sucking again, pattern is holding at a solid 5.0. I am really happy with my Harsh Environments entry, but do to the weather today I might try the same shot again tomorrow. I have a couple of things I have added to my arsenal of things I can screw up. My wife gave me a circular polarizer, And I purchased Photomatix Pro. My goal is to make it out of the 4̢۪s and low 5̢۪s for 2007..

My Occupation shot got validated! Now I can continue to watch two shots in the 4.9 - 5.1 range! My Hoover switch is firmly in the ON position!
I have an entry in the Free Study, 12 Days of Christmas (uninspired, but it should meet the challenge) and Fences. Might swap Fence for Centered before next Tuesday. |

Patterns is starting out good for me, but I know it'll suck in the end!

Bob - I came across that photo - unfortunately I was eating piece of leftover cake at the time and nearly got sick. I can't imagine there's another more disturbing image in the challenge. |
myself...I think it should be removed...my wife and I just had a new arrival 14 days ago, and it was a close call and the image is very disturbing.

But there are some really terrific shots in that challenge, so the bar is quite high. |

We made a daytrip to Washington, D.C. visiting photography exhibits at galleries and museums. I was very impressed with a exhibit at the Natural History Museum entitled "Transitions: Photographs by Robert Creamer". website
He makes images on a flatbed scanner, takes these into photoshop and prints the results on a large scale printer. There is a video that shows the process he goes through to make the images. At one point, he set some dried flowers on a glass plate on top of the scanner, set these on fire and scanned this - freaked me out. A beautiful smoky image resulted though.

Congrats on your new baby. However, I don't believe that they should remove that photo. It doesn't break any rules. Photography is designed to encourage a response, and it seems to have done that. If you don't like the photo, and think it has no redeeming quality, express your opinion with a low vote. |

i concur with mist. congrats on the new arrival, and i'm glad all is well. a close call with a baby is a terrifying thing.
however, this is a site for art, and art should challenge. if you don't like it, vote it low, and move on.

on a completey different, much lighter note: i was so excited the past few days - i was going to get 10,000 views to my profile. woohoo! i eagerly awaited it to change over... then, finally noticed, after about 3 days of this, that the count was actually 9085...
there is a good reason why i didn't teach maths. gawd, how dense can you get?

Argh. The saga continues...
So last week, I go in, and say "Why is it I have no internet?" The nice woman types up an email and says "We'll ask the question" (like I haven't been asking up until now...) "We should know something by Wednesday." Wednesday came and went, still no internet. So I call today. The nice woman says "I see there's a request in for information on why you have no internet. You should have an answer to your request by next Wednesday." Sigh. Apparently there's a holy grail-like activity on Wednesdays that I keep missing.
The possibilities are that a) there's no room at the inn (no more ports); b) the line where I live can't support service (bullcookies - there are at least three wireless systems running where I live - they're getting service from somewhere! And yes, they're all secure, darn it); or c) no one's gotten around to keying the information into a main computer system somewhere.
At any rate... anyone know anything about German cable services?? I'm giving up on the phone company. |

Deb, how frustrating!!! I hope this is resolved for you soon. Maybe you should make friends with one of the folks in your building who has wireless - those darn secure systems... :0) |

the choices are soo hard. which to submit for the free study? argh? i guess i'll second guess myself for another few days.
i've submitted for harsh environments. i wish the pixel limit was 800 - i'm afriad my image is too big and detailed to really show at 720. o well - this one is really taking advantage of the new rules...
good luck nabil - good to see you back!
deb, one thing that i found that worked reallly well in botswana was playing the stupid foreigner. take a day off work, and go into the telekom offices. be really nice, and really polite, but just don't leave until they give you what they want. if they try to send you somewhere else, get someone to take you - there are no labels on the doors, or i can't read german yet...
a very useful question is 'what do you think i should do?' that gives the nameless government functionary imagined power, and it usually makes them feel good to be able bestow some little favour upon the hapless beseecher. if you're dealing with a man, don't cry, but look brave, with slightly glistening eyes.
never get angry. no matter what.
take your lunch and a book (or two), and wait inside offices.
it sometimes helps to have a suitably sad story prepared - terminally ill family member you need to stay in touch with - he/she is deaf, so can't use the 'phone..., or some such thing.
good luck.
always be polite.
when you're leaving, then you can burn your bridges. a friend was leaving botswana, and hadn't recieved his final severance from the govt. so he went into the ministry of education. they said the cheque was lost, and woudl take weeks to re-issue. he was leaving the next day. he stood up, went to a filing cabinet, extracted a file, and threw it out the window. he said he would keep on doing that every 2 minutes until he had his cheque (we're talking thousands of pounds). the cheque was in hands in minutes. he said the looks on their faces were almost worth not getting the cheque...

okay fellow suckies!
i'm setting the ISO to 100 and using an f4-5 and hitting the streets today on my lunch.
i've been way too inactive lately.
i'm looking for a free study and centered.
wish me luck.

I re-edited my Harsh Environment. It's probably going to get hammered for the processing. I like it though. My Pattern is still holding at 5.5, so I guess that's where it will end up.

Good luck - sounds more fun than cleaning the bathroom which I am trying to do (and avoid) incrementally this afternoon. Hmmm? Harsh Environment? |

i've had a few bathrooms in the past that might qualify for that.
i was actually going to shoot a harsh environment in this bar i hang out in last night. it's clientel in the evening are mainly punkers and metalheads. but while i know a lot of them, it was the one night where none of them showed up.
now that i'm a member, i guess i better start learning more about post proccessing... or better yet, what all the buttons on my camera do.

I figured out just a couple of days ago how to use USM in Photoshop. No wonder everyone kept commenting on my pictures not looking sharp enough. I think Mensa is about to ask me to join the genious society. I can take the photos. |

I remember seeing USM and wondering how something called unsharp would add sharpness. Then I read that digital shots usually need settings of 300 .3 0, so I set it there and used that on every shot. Finally realized that the adjustments were good things and could really make a difference. Now if only I could figure out dodge and burn, layers and (especially) masks. Part of my goals for 2007! |

Chris, how did your lunchtime street shooting turn out? |
|
|
12/28/2006 04:21:12 PM · #2600 |
USM is a degree course.
If you use noise reduction software, if you use layer blending modes, if you use a P&S or just shoot jpegs - all these things will give you pictures that react differently to and require different setting in USM. Not that I can tell you a whole lot, sorry. Just play with the sliders.
63%, 0.8, 1 were the last settings I used, I think.
A rule of thumb is to leave USM until after the last resizing.
Sharpening often produces weird effects, the mildest (but unfortunately commonest) of which is haloing - the edges overreach their mandate in distinguishing themselves from their immediate environments with a little bit of contrasting tone, heh.
Anyway I'm now up for harsh environments. I resisted the temptation to take a picture of a bird in the snow.
