In principle, it's working somewhat like a CRT tube in reverse -- the information is being sent back from the sensing surface back through a lens to the opposite of an electron gun.

On your TV screen/monitor, the image is being built-up by exposing each single set of phosphors in rapid succession.

interesting - would make good concept for photo-stitching in the camera.
