I just was reading a thread started by someone looking for comments, and one of the comments said that the person never checked off that they were helped by a comment. Therefore they would not put any comments on the persons portfolio. I was wondering if you do look at whether a comment you made was helpful, and if it tones whether you will comment on future images. I never have checked any. didn't know how to do it. And it appears that portfolio comments have been very sparse. Sorry that I never realized that checking off that helpful box might make a difference.
I have kept many of my old images that had comments, and I stopped posting new images because I get no comments. Oh well, I will keep on trying to comment on others portfolios, and maybe somebody will reciprocate with a comment.

I don't ever really look back at comments I've made to see if they were deemed helpful or not.
That being said, sometimes I'll take a look at the comments made vs. comments helpful if it strikes me but I don't think I am ever looking for a particular comment.
I also liberally check "helpful" on those made on mine but not if they were merely "nice one" or "what is this?"

the only comment i've ever not checked off read 'merry christmas'...the rest of them i deem helpful, even if they are one or two-word comments, because it lets me know that they saw the image and it at least called them to leave some sort of input, whether positive, neutral, negative, completely confused, etc. because it gives me at least an inkling of an idea as to how the image is being received.
i occasionally look back to see if other people marked off my images, but it generally doesn't change how or why i comment on things. i'm certainly not going to stop leaving comments just because they weren't being marked off as helpful....

I'll frequently go back and look at some of the images that I've left comments on during a challenge. Primarily to use as a learning tool for myself. I'll look to see who else commented and compare what else was said about that image versus what I had to say.
It's my observation that most of the time when someone hasn't marked a comment helpful, none of the comments left are marked helpful. Typically it's a newbie that doesn't know, or an extremely self-confident photographer that has it all worked out and doesn't find all that babble helpful in the least. :P |

I got in a snit fit last year because comments were not marked as helpful. I mark the ones I get just to let then person that left it know I read it. I think there are maybe a few that I haven't marked.
Now I leave comments mostly on challenge photos. I'm trying to be honest, but I do understand that the photographer might not like what I say and so the comment might not be marked as helpful. That's fine. I learn by commenting, not by getting a certain ratio of helpful/not helpful check marks. |
