... In case it helps. I am very happy with webstrikesolutions but I am reaching the 100MB limit.

//www.1and1.com

I just registered this morning, there is several step but I have my webspace available by FTP and did not give any credit card info.
When you register you give your phone number and an automated system call you back to give you the PIN number to validate your account.

I just pushed one test file there as a test.
Looks like a good deal to me.

Lionel
PS : I do not know them, I have no link with them, I do not know about them except what I just said above !

Wow!!! Actually it looks like it includes Canada as well. At least the registration site I was refered to allows Canada as a country and lists the provinces as well. Great great deal. No way I would use up anywhere close to this and at 6.00/year domain name hosting that is cheep as well.

You do not even need the domain name. This is my current website there

It looks great. I even read all the terms and conditions and everything was standard or better for the customer.

Pretty cool, it looks like a great service for the price (free). I wonder what the catch is to it being free. Maybe surfers will be spammed with ads when they hit your website. I suppose that's not a big deal unless it's too much.

What's really cool is all the built-in tools and database access they give you. This will make it fairly easy for non-technical people to use, and could get very popular.

Two things to think about if you are going to make a business site (or any other mission critical site): When traffic of this service increases due to lots of new users setting up their sites, getting increasing traffic to their websites, and increased database hits on all those new pages and websites, is this service going to slow down a crawl? Looks like some limitations to the databases you can have, but what do you want for free? :)

Lionel,
I'd like to build my own site with a lot of space to play with and a blank canvas. Is that what this is all about? I don't have an existing website or anything. I'm not trying to make money. I just want to design and create a personal website that has nothing to do with Angelfire or Geocities. Is this for an individual or business or what? It seems like a good deal, I'm just clueless can i do whatever I want with that 500mb? Thanks.

Yes, I personnally build my galleries with breezebrowser and just copy them there. In 1y I have used my 100MB at my other provider, true I could do some cleaning, but then my mother ask me .. 'I cannot see anymore that picture of flower ...' ;-)

When I read that, it seemed like there had to be some kind of catch. When something looks too good to be true, it usually is. I did a search and found this article. I guess the company is legit! I'm signing up now, thx for the heads up about 1&1 lionelm.

It does seem like a decent promotional offer.

The one thing I couldn't find info about is their back-up policy...

It would be resonable perhaps to expect that they don't provide any.

When you click on the promotion tab a description comes up. It says that it backs up your site but doesn't give specifics.

I've been a customer of 1&1 for about 2 years now, and they've been excellent all the way through. We have one of the top-end packages (being a business), but I'd imagine they're pretty good for most packages.

What an incredible deal! Can't beat the price. I'm in the process now of signing up. The service we're getting is like $30 / month normally, so after my 3 years, I'm thinking I'll be scaling back a bit, but until then...

And then there's Apple's mac.com: from 100 MB at US 100 to 1 GB (US 350 upgrade). A little more than just a site, but...
