would it hurt to ask if the ban can be served after the WPL ends? They let football players finish the season before they put them in jail. this shouldnt be any different...
11/18/2006 06:33:22 PM · #402
well the WPL is not really anything to do with DPC so I KNOW they would say no to that .. I really thought that diffuse glow was allowed but now I KNOW it is not so I'll be back in time for WPL4 and I hope the team will stick together for it Im pretty sure though that for WPL4 Im going with a D200 team... all with are of cause welcome, get working on our new team logo folks.. Im still around supporting you from the sideline

I just think it stinks that you pay good money to support this site, You enter the challenges for fun (Not Cash Prizes) or any prizes for that matter. Suspension seems a tad hardcore for a cash supporter of DPC.... When you bite the hand that feeds you, You starve.

I don't think it is quite like that. The challenges have rules, and participants in the challenges are expected to stick to them, for the good of all. "Diffuse glow" is an effects filter, and images are routinely DQed for its use (in basic editing) - MAK's image is not the first to be DQed for using diffuse glow. But, MAK's suspension from participating in challenges is not for this one DQ, it is for a number of accumulated DQs. It is very, very unfortunate, but it happens, and life goes on.

Also, MAK is right, the WPL is not associated with DPC, even though the WPL organizers expect WPL participants to adhere to DPC challenge rules.

As for myself, I think you guys will understand that I need to stay out of dealing with images from any of you that come up for validation. It would not be right for me to deal with them.

I know rules are rules.. But why so extreme when all we are playing for here is bragging rights for a few days? If some of the money I spent on my membership was going into a prize purse each week, I would probably support stronger enforcement, But this is supposed to be a fun site about learning photography, I see no value in taking a good photographer out of the mix for 4 weeks? It seems to me that no one learns anything from this except a cyber form of juvenile discipline.

But like you said the rules are what they are. So we will have to form a D-200 Team for the WPL 4 and try again with Mak along.

Meanwhile we have some extra work cut out for us so lets pound out some awesome Postcards and take a win in the WPL...

Brian, please think about it this way for a moment (and I'm not picking on MAK, this goes for everyone in general):

A mistake can be overlooked, but suspensions are only issued for repeated violations. Whether you pay to play or not, a game is only fun if there's some reasonable expectation that everyone is following the rules.

In other words, MAK's suspension is not out of the ordinary, it is not a cyber form of juvenile discipline. Site Council is not just trying to take a good photographer out of the mix.

i still think suspensions should be reserved for people who cheat on the voting side of the game.

as far as editing goes, a DQ should be good enough.

Im a repeat offender, that is why i got a 2 week ban, I should read and understand the rules of DPC, actually I did read them but didnt understand them obviously, Im happy with the result, Im happy with my photography, I know in my heart that I am not doing this for any malicious gain or advantage just a miss interpretation of the rules, I have done before so I deserve to get the treatment reserved for ALL or ANY member that do this, To be honest Im getting used to it, just lately I have been screwing up a lot, not just on DPC but in other things too. I really do not mind about the ban, I do however mind about letting the side down.. The same thing happened to me when I was captain of Team Nikon first time.. The competetive spirit in me, the will to win, cuts in over basic logic and sense and I forget that there is a rule to follow... dont get me wrong here.. I DO NOT CHEAT!!! I just try to hard to make, improve, the best I can as not to let people down but usually the end result is that i DO in fact let everyone down.. LOL it's a part of me, Im totally used to it.

I'll be back, and those that wish to be on my team are always welcome. I now have a copy of DPC editing rules on the wall above my Mac.

I blindly believed that in basic editing it was fine to apply a filter so long as it was applied to the whole image and that the only illeagal thing was spot editing.. I was wrong, I paid the price. I will be back, better, wiser, sharper and older.... yohoho see you guys in WPL4 BUT!! Im still captain and I still have as much competetive spirit so Im saying.. GO TEAM NIKON D! WE CAN STILL MAKE THE PLAY-OFFS

Like the battle of the ALAMO we a small group in the world that can stand and fight with heart.. lets KICK SOME DAMN CANON BUTT!!!!

GO TEAM!

OK, I go off line for a few days and look what happens!

MAK - The whole thing sucks, poor luck matey.

URSULA - You're in a naff position, but professional as always.

Ralph, Tony, Bugz....rules is rules. We signed up to them, and you have to tick that magic box with EVERY submission, so we can't really complain when it works against us.

I'm know that we will all produce some amazing photography and go out of WPL3 with heads high and dignity in tact.

As for WPL4 and this Team D200 talk.....where do I stand with my D50? Should I get my coat and call a cab now?

Well , I think we might be able to make one tiny exception and keep you around for team D200. I think we would be hurting ourselves by not having a photographer of your talent helping us.Who knows, naybe your D50 will break and you'll have to get the D200.
11/19/2006 08:47:40 AM · #411
by the way, i hope you guys have got good things this week, both of my entries are in the 4.9 to 4.7 range. The only thing this week that will enter will be perspective, i just don't have any ideas for the other two.

Cheers mate....only thing is that if my D50 breaks I'll probably be out of digital photography for a long time.....well lets hope it never comes to that!

I still have NOTHING for next week...it's been so manic at the office and at home..I'm going for the last minute approach.

one of the things that attracted me to "photography" to start with is its solitary nature -
the teams thing is fun but it really does not influence my pictures
the attraction of DPC to me are the ideas that i wouldn't have thought about otherwise - the rules force me to think about the IMAGE & composition not post processing 158(including voting & submissions) no dq's to date ..

Sunday morning mumbles...

And even though it doesn't count I will show it anyway. Mainly because I am very surprised someone selected my HDR photo as a fav.. given the score and comments I have received.

And Im not sure how I stand on this either but BEFORE I was DQ'd I put my entries into the perspective challenge and into the Postcard and free study... are they ALSO DQ'd now as a result of my 2 week ban?

I hope not because i like my shots and feel they would of done quite well and they actually do not break any rules..

I had to reinstal the MAC so the originals were lost BUT!!! I have done a memory card recovery and got them all back with EXIF Intact so should be fine.

It's been a bad week, but Im just too excited about my wife coming home... nothing else really matters... hehehe

I must have missed something. Your wife is away? That could cause a man not to think straight. haha Explains why you are having a bad week.

2 weeks isn't that long of a time you should be able to play by the time we meet 5D? or am i getting the math wrong? when you get a chance email me the photos you recovered. Would love to see them.

Blue Skys here today going to get my Postcard shot this afternoon. I love deadlines. lol

MAK, you're handling this better than anyone. I am very proud of how you're handling this.

Congratulations on your PB!

The entries that are already in challenges stand, they will not be taken down or disqualified because of the suspension. The suspension goes for two weeks from when it was started.

I want you to know that I don't think you were trying to cheat in any way. I also want you to know that it wasn't me who asked for validation - the validation request came in from a user concerned about something different than what the image was disqualified for.

Anyway, it'll all work out.

I'm glad you got something in for postcards and perspective :)

MAK is only suspended (not banned) from submitting to challenges, for 2 weeks, through Sunday, December 2. He can vote, comment, post images to portfolio, participate in forums, the only thing he can't to is post images to challenges during that time.

I've got my Perspective entry....is adding a lens vignette in basic allowed?

sorry guys, no postcard entry. I live in the dullest place on earth, and life has been manic this week.

Not only is my area the most boring in the world, it was also so overcast and rainy all weekend. Not one break in the sky. I had my camera with me today, but the only shot I took was of a nuclear reactor.

I hope the next challenges can be indoor ones.
