So this was my entry for Far Side. I'm not going to complain about my score, since I think the editing was just too dark and people didn't quite get that the deadpan expression is characteristic of Far Side characters, but after recalibrating my monitor, the background details outside the window seem to have disappeared. I'm curious as to how many people with calibrated monitors can see what's outside the window? I'm trying to figure out if I've done this whole calibration thing right, since I also suspect monitor calibration issues as the culprit for the other dismal scores I've been getting lately.
Edited to note that I processed it for the background details to be heavily shadowed, but not difficult to see.

I can see the background - I believe my screen is calibrated okay :-) |

I can barely see it, and my monitor is calibrated. |

BARELY VISIBLE.
Wouldn't have noticed it if you didn't point it out. |

Hmm... so it seems that my monitor is currently calibrated to slightly darker than the "barely visible" folks, since I have to really strain to see the barest hint of detail. I'm undecided as to whether or not this is problematic.

pretty dark, but I can barely see it too. no fancy calibration software for me, but my monitor is calibrated after months and months...and months of trial and error. |

Using my current monitor settings, this is what the photo was supposed to look like. cryingdragon, if it's so bright that you can tell the color of the car to the far right, I think your monitor is really off. You should be hard pressed to see that there's a car there at all.

Items are quite visible on one monitor, but not on the other. Mind you, the presence of these items had no impact on my vote since I did not find them intrusive.

Mine is "butt calibrated". I "calibrated" mine when I adjusted my display for a game where they have this "highly visible, visible, barely visible" adjustment screen, LOL. Of course if you are hardcore enough you could calibrate using one of those display calibrating things.

Yeah, I get ya. I did want the items there, though unobtrusively, since the original had stars that I couldn't really duplicate and I didn't want the mirror to look totally detached from the car. I think that darker shots in general suffer quite a lot on DPC.

Ditto for me on the first one, and even moreso on your second shot. I can now see green grass as well. My monitor is calibrated :) |

It sounds very wrong to me that two calibrated monitors could show the same image at such polar extremes. I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong, it just seems to miss the point of calibrating in the first place.

My monitor is calibrated correctly by Adobe Gamma. I cant see anything outside the window except one blue dot between the window and the mirror.
Farside2.jpg I can see everything outside the window. I see a structure with a small double window at the bottom and a window above. A tree and limbs and what looks to be a railing between the car and background.

Just a friendly reminder (not targeted at anyone in particular):
As how large the voter base is on this site, we must be prepared to accept the fact that not everybody have their monitors calibrated or cared to do so. If you have a photo that margins at a barely visible region, be prepared to have voters that can't see them as you intended. A successful presenter is one that is able to reach out to most, if not all of his audience.

In fact, I can often find discrepancies in color, especially blacks. Unfortunately, I can't calibrate it, as I can only adjust brightness, not contrast or gamma. I think it might just be because I have the Ultra-Bright screen on my Gateway laptop.

it's also important to remember that not all monitors are equal, and in many cases "calibrated" is relative to the quality of the screen |

Yep, I can see the background on this school (read: extremely unlikely to be calibrated well) monitor. |

It's a good reminder for sure, but also not quite what I was asking, just in case this is what you were getting at. I specifically asked for opinions from folks known to be calibrated for that very reason. You're right, dark images rarely do well here because the calibrated/not calibrated divide is rather large.

I can see it. I see the car, the tree, the covered parking, the parking lines and the windows. Also I see the rest of the alien that's right outside the door. |
