I am so excited, hopefully today I will get my new camera, a canon 10D. Plus 3 lenses. I can't wait. The other thing which happened on Friday, now don't laugh because most of you have that, is a adsl line. I used to have such a slow dial up, now voting goes so quickly. (Bear in mind that I live on a tiny little remote island in the middle of nowhere and these things come a little slower when you are out in nowhere.)

Welcome to the team ;). Which lenses are you getting?

Canon EF70mm-200/F:2.8 IS USM zoom lens
Canon EF100mm/F:2.8 Macro USM lens
Canon EF16-35/F:2.8L USM zoom lens

I hope I made the right choices. It is so difficult to decide.
By the way I must thank my husband for all this, he really is spoiling me. He can see how much I enjoy photography.

Hmmm...personally I'd have avoided the crap lenses and just gone for the best. But hey, it's your choice...

Ah but seriously. You can't go wrong with those, surely. Three of the best lenses Canon makes. Haven't had the pleasure of using any of them, though I do have the 70-200 F4L and can say it's just brilliant and I can imagine the 2.8 with IS is that much better. The long end is quite long on the 10D (like a 320mm) so it's not too bad for getting in close for sports and wildlife and stuff. Great portrait lens, too. I'd still like longer, though...perhaps I'll pick up the 1.4x teleconverter, or save my pennies for a 300 F4.

I'd be interested in knowing if you miss the 35-70 range all that much. I have the 50mm 1.4 and it's on the camera almost all the time. I'd highly recommend that one (or the 1.8) for filling the gap, and for very low light. The 24-70 F2.8L is the obvious choice for the third L zoom, though.

Have fun! I'm super jealous of that lineup...

Thanks James. I must admit I am petrified, I am only used to my Olympus C4040Z. This is a big step, I reckon that I have a lot to learn about this new setup.

Ah, don't be afraid...it's just a camera. It'll definitely teach you about depth of focus and the need to pay attention to aperture more carefully. I had to change my way of thinking with it. With the lenses you have you'll likely not experience the 'soft image straight out of the camera' complaint that you hear often. All three of my lenses make images so sharp that I use the same sharpening that I did with my Sony. Yours will too I imagine.

This was the second thing that jumped into my mind reading your post, Jean. 50mm is a pretty standard lens (or 35-70mm zoom to include the 50mm).

The first thing was 'oooooohhhhhhh' and jealousy.

Enjoy.

Thanks, I am so looking forward to it. Thanks for all the encouragement. I haven't been able to sleep for the past 3 days! So excited and nervous. Lets hope the plane with my camera in it arrives safely this evening from Hong Kong!

Again, welcome to the team, Jean. You will LOVE the 100/2.8 macro! I am constantly amazed at just how good it is.
I second (third?) the opinions about the mid-range, and having just bought the 50/1.4 I can attest it is also fantastic glass. I can now work confidently in light I NEVER could have before. It's very sharp, and after playing around with it for only a day, I am very anxious to try some portrait work with it, I think it will do beautifully for that. I'd consider this lens seriously when you're looking to fill that gap.
BTW, if you remember, post with your opinion on the 16-35 after you've got some experience with it. I have a "third-party" 19-35 that I'm not overly thrilled with, but it will have to do for a year or so.

I got a really good deal on the wrinkle-free, spill-free Dockers a few months ago. The 'Nice pants, Rick' ones. Those and some polyester blend shirts and you're off to the races.

Someone should save this thread for evidence.
