So I asked before, and you all said that one person isn't allowed to submit more than one photo to a challenge (member or not), right?

I've been looking through some of the recent challenges, and am finding quite a few that are almost identical in theme, setup, props, or all of the above. Am I just imagining it? Or are some people submitting more than one picture, maybe under a different screen name? Or does everyone just think alike??? Or am I the only one who has noticed this? Am I crazy?

Probably just imagining things to be honest. IP addresses are logged and so on...there's probably something based on location too. If someone does submit a bunch of photos, chances are very high that they will be caught.

Sorry, I thought you asked a different question.

Also, there are several folks that are friends off this site and work on challenges together. Therefore you may get same setup and slightly different comps.

It's not unheard of for shooting buddies or workshops with multiple DPCers to yield similar photos using the same props and models.

People on DPC do tend to have a herd mentality, too. There is definitely a favored DPC look, and many photogs do their best to cater to it. People often come up with the same basic idea and then appear to vote others like their own entry rather highly. At least that's my theory, since all my creative entries get loads of comments about how creative they are and then sink almost suicidally.

I noticed 2 trees in the tree challenge that were the same tree. I figured it was friends on the same outing. Thats just to obvious to be anyone cheating. ;)

There were two similar shots of the same model in Silhouette. And I believe djabordjabor mentioned that his Peas entry came about through a workshop with other DPCers.

It's so interesting. For example, I was just looking at the Geometry challenge, and there are 7 pictures of spiderwebs, and two of them have water droplets on them! That's not something that I would have thought to photograph for geometry, but apparently several other people did! It's just weird.

It doesn't quite seem fair to share! Here I am, stuck in rural Idaho, with no other DPCers, and no one to model for me. I have no one else's creativity to rely on! I've got to come up with it on my own! How not fair that other people get to have help! I think I'm going to pout! :-(

Just reach out and ask... lots of very cool people here who will tell you everything they know without batting an eye. Ask publicly or privately... you'll see... :)

I just found people who's work inspired me, and asked them a ton of questions. Some of them were even unfortunate enough to give me their chat address and we talk frequently about DPC, upcoming challenges, current challenge entries and how we are doing, how the dumb voters aren't loving our obvious spectacular image, well, you get the drift.

Just having someone that you look up to, whose work you want to emulate, that actually talks to you - well I've learned a TON.

I had no idea, for example, that you could sell an image for over $350 per sale - now I do it pretty regularly. That's a good thing to learn, and I never would have found it on my own - I didn't even know to look for it.

Hope that helps - this is a great place to learn - and a great place to go mad trying to please the masses - which is learning in a more painful way. ;-)

Trust me....I live in a remote area of Australia. Excluding my daughter, I think the nearest DPC member is Sherpet (about 11 hours away). I am 3 hours away from the nearest city. I don't have one from DPC to come photographing with me, except my daughter.

So I have to come up with my own ideas. Often I will come up with something and then Kita will get upset saying that was her idea....but we still go out and shoot.

In the last year I have only missed one challenge and that was Best of 2002. So even on your own you can still do it.

Well, I am definitely here to learn! I thought I enjoyed photography before, but I am becoming passionate about it now! Wow! I thought I knew quite a bit, but I am learning every day just how little I know! DPC has even inspired me to take a digital photography class, which starts this week, and I am stoked!

So... any words of wisdom you long-timers can share with a newbie would be great! Like... what do you photograph in a rural area where you know no one and have no models (I just moved here)???

Edit: and is there anyone out there in Rural Eastern Idaho?

Look at any of the Icelanders. They shoot lots of landscapes and weather and they win so many ribbons that we often wonder conspiracy ;-)

I'm not good at this either, but I have a strange eye. You could take photos of old churches, fields of corn (wait, that's potatoes in Idaho), sunsets, the mountains, anything that you find interesting.

Ohh, there IS an old church that I didn't even thing of photoing! Thanks for the idea! You may see it in an upcoming challenge! ;-)

I take out students on a weekly basis, so I am always on the lookout for new places. Whenever I am driving around I see places and then I make a mental note for a later visit.

You know how when you go shopping and you have money in your pocket and you can't find anything you like...and then when you have no money, you suddenly see lots of things you like. Well, that is the same thing. Don't expect to go out and get an award winning shot. It won't happen.

Make those mental notes of places you see that you want to explore and then when you need to go and get a shot you will already have a list of places to go to.

I have found the most amazing places that way.

Models?? Start with your house. Still life, pets, neighbours, family etc. Then you move onto friends....volunteer your time to a local photographer and build your experience and your contacts. Before you know it you will be giving this same advice to someone else.

In one of my recent shots, I discovered this amazing, beautiful tree and root filled place... and it had been right across the street from my house the whole time, and I just didn't know it. I'd always been looking at the area straight-on, and when I went to it at an angle, a whole new scene arose. One of the beauties of photography, for me, is that it gives me a new way of seeing the world.

There's a small population of psychics on DPC. You will notice that many anonymous challenge photos have comments left on them written in what just happens to be the native tounge (not english) of the anonymous photog. When the results are in and the names are revealed, I sit back in awe of the commentor's extra-sensory abilties.

I tend to notice a few photos in each challenge that share the same model, or even the exact same scene photographed in a slightly different way. I tend to assume that it's a couple who've shot them, but I guess it could just be fellow DPCers.

Which is fine, so long as they don't give each other 10s every time ;)

It's interesting as normally one of the two similar shots is preferable to me.

I am from South Africa - 11 diferent official languages (therefor loads of diferent cultures and tastes), Interesting places, wonderfull sunsets, spectacular wildlife BUT I have to be at work every day. I had to find a way to take my camera with me.

Luckily I am on the road alot - One of the places I got to for work purposes is on the other side of Hluluwe Game reserve. 1 hour drive through the game reserve.
Recently I took this photo doing some work at the Richards Bay Harbour.

My point is; have your camera with you. One thing that I've learned is that the best photo opps happen when you don't have your camera with you.

That would be this one: and this one:

Then there's charliebaker who shot this one but didn't enter it:

I was in Oregon for a family wedding and stopped in to visit David (charliebaker) at Cannon Beach. His shot was taken at the same time as mine, about half a mile from his house. While we were there, Madhatter came up to us as well; I guess he and David know each other. But his shot seems to have been made on a different day. Then of course Doc Achoo and Steve Davidson showed up later, so we had a mini get-together. It was fun.

But back to the tree; it's a very famous tree, actually; it's showed up in a bazillion photographs from that vantage point. I actually shot it in large format back in the 70's, and it was like visiting an old friend with whom you have lost touch. Doc actually PM'd me before I flew out to tell me about this tree; imagine my pleasure to find out that his perfect tree was one I already knew :-)

It's a very small world, isn't it?

Robt.

Yeah, but if take your camera with you, then the best photo ops won't happen because you have your camera with you. It's a catch-22 thing.

Your best bet is to take the camera with you, but keep it hidden so the photo ops think it's safe to happen.

Trust me. I'm a genius... I think.

:D
