What a grand lady Texas lost this week...she'll be laid to rest on Monday. She was one of the few Democrats I've ever voted for and I had the utmost respect for her. I had the sincere pleasure of interviewing her for our campus TV station back in my undergrad days, and I found one of the few pictures I have of that day just a few minutes ago. I wanted to share, even though it's not the grandest image (technically speaking). I will miss her wit and her candor, and I hope that everyone can appreciate the legacy she leaves behind...blazing a bigger trail for women and minorities in government and making Texas a better place to live.
By the way, one of my all-time favorite "Richardisms" was this one from the Democratic National Convention a while back, while poking a little fun at George W. Bush:
"Poor George, he can't help it...he was born with a silver foot in his mouth." ;)
If you care to, share your thoughts about her passing and your favorite quotes as well. :)

She certainly was a pip. Being a diehard Republican, I still found it very hard to dislike her. She just had a great spunk to her, that let you look past her politics.

Never heard of her, then again I turn off anything to do with politics anyway.
I heard that Arnold Schwarzenegger was gonna' be a Governor or somethin.
I should get out more.
Sounds like she made a difference for the State of Texas though, and if we all left the planet a better place than it was when we came into it, then we made it a worthwhile journey.

laurielblack you are talking about one of my idols. This lady went from "housewife" to governor of the State of Texas. She did great things on the way to that office and continued doing so when she got there. Molly Ivins gave her a pretty good send off in her column this week.
As you say, RIP, Ann Richards. She was one of a kind. |

I was at the capitol building today but strangely enough didn't take any pictures of the event. I believe they will have the same services (i.e. lie in state) tomorrow for anybody is in Austin interested.

I would have liked to have known her. Ivins' column was great. |
