OK - I am looking to pick up a cheap 70-300mm lens and I am looking at the Sigma 70-300mm DG. Now there is one with APO and one wihtout (for $50 less). Can anyone help me with whether or not the difference in build is worth it (or what the difference is in the first place) or if there is another lens in the $200 range that anyone owuld reccommend in its place. I need to get closer to my tigers.

Crystal and I had the non apo version and did not like it. Have heard good things about the apo version.

Get the APO version, I used it in this test and at 100 and 200mm it compares nicely to the Canon L lens in sharpness.

Get APO verision, very sharp lens all the way to 300mm. hunts a bit on focucing in low light, but you gotta give up something, and if it's not the cash then ...

I have the APO and i love it. its a great lens for what it cost! Not that good as a macro lense tho. (you have to have the camera pretty far away from the subject. Great as a telephoto though!

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro:

Macro - (from about 6 feet away)
Action - ,
Zoom - , ,

With other options for macro now it rarely gets used for that (find the macro switch tough to toggle sometimes).

It's pretty good for action shots with medium or better light. I've taken many family soccer shots with it.

Fairly nice reach at the long end. The puzzle and squirrel shots were hand-held, the river shot was tripod mounted.

One minor complaint is it's challenging to use filters (any that need adjusting, like circular polarizer) with the lens hood.

Would I buy it again? For the price, yes, although I would research Tamron as well next time.

I'll just add my opinion, definately get the APO version (it has a red ring around the end if memory serves). Was a nice lense, i really liked it and only sold it when I upgraded to an L lense.

I have heard bad things about the non APO version

Wow - Thanks to all for the responses - with pics to boot. I really appreciate it. I have been at the zoo quite a few times this year and maxed out my Sigma 18-125mm lens and still not gotten close enough (Magic & Mystery challenge entry was a lucky end product of not enough zoom). But it wasnt until we were on vacation that Aimee sensed a desire for a bit longer lens. We are a single income family and the budget is tight so we want to make sure we only spend as much money as we have to but at the same time not get complete crap. So now it looks like it is time to start saving a bit. I think this is the lens (APO version) that we want to go with. Maybe by Christmas. Thanks for the help and input anyone. If any of you come across one of these for under $190 give us a shout.

How does one tell which version of the lense is which? Mine is labelled as a 70-300mmD but that's about all that I can see on it. Bought it used for dirt cheap so I wasn't going to argue, but now I'm curious.

There are a bunch of different versions of this lense listed in the DPC hardware database...
