To take a pic of something common or not and make it abstract or unrecognizable so that the viewer has to think a bit.

Great idea - but people should be encouraged to take shots other than just macros. |

This doesn't limit a photog to macro |

Here is another example from my 'out takes' for the Macro challenge. |

Here's a non-macro, non-telescopic example (though it doesn't require a lot of thought to see what it is):
(It only took two tries to embed the image; not too bad!)

That potato chip is wild!
Here's a few examples that aren't macro but leaves one guessing...

I would hope that if this idea did make it to a challenge that it would be for an OPEN challenge. I would hate to not compete in my own idea. |

Why do I always have to be the naysayer????
This is always interesting and fun to see a "what is this" thread pop up once in a while. But the reality is, for the most part those shots aren't real interesting images. The only real interest comes when you find out what it is, hopefully say 'a-hah', and finally realize what it is. To look through 200-300 shots like the ones posted above, I'd probably give up after about 10 that I couldn't figure out (which would probably be most of them).
I do think it could be fun if there was some garauntee that all the images would be somewhat recognizable given that you knew what it was. But (sorry) I still don't really see the boiling water in your shot (why the weird color?), so I'm not sure that's likely to happen.
Sorry. :( |

Well you're entitled to your opinion and you DON'T have to be the naysayer. Personally, I find the mystery, color, contrast & texture, incredibly beautiful and interesting; especially in my shot of boiling water. If you had read my "Guess!" thread then you would've seen that I used the stove light which gave it the amber hues.
"But the reality is, for the most part those shots aren't real interesting images"
I wish you wouldn't state this as factual.
That's ok tho... you don't have to like it. Not all people have an eye for abstract art. :P

jon, the yellow one is a beautiful shot. If only everyone would take such care with their abstracts, it would be a fun challenge. That would just be wishful thinking on my part, I do believe.

Fair enough - should have substituted an IMO in place of "the reality is". :)
And, maybe I took the suggestion the wrong way. Just looking at the abstract images on their own, I'm sure there would be the standard range of entries, from "interesting" to stunning. I had actually seen your "Guess" thread first, and that plus the thread topic had me focused on the idea of having to figure out what each picture was. IMO :), that would get to be a tedious task. |
