I always wonder when I see a few comments say the same thing, but I totally disagree with. I now have two comments saying the shot is out of focus. Now I gotta say I feel I have the knowledge to know whether a shot is in focus or not, but two commenters? It gives me total pause for thought. Plus they were both baggies so I can't PM them and ask them to give me more details.

Grrr...

Just on that, is it appropriate to contact commenters while voting is on? I have a couple of comments, one on each of my photos I have going, that I would like to query. One says the image is noisy and I can't see the noise unless I bump the brightness right up. The other one comments on the composition and makes a suggestion that just wasnt possible under the circumstances.

Well, yes and no. I certainly will PM people at times, but you run the risk of them not liking it and lowering your score even more. I generally start by telling people not to change their score. There's no rule against doing it, but if people sense you are "campaigning" it will likely come back to haunt you.

Not too bad. Much better than the first 12 or so. A little disappointed to be honest... was hoping for a little higher, but there is hope. Only 1 day in.

Looks like eyewave is going really strong. Good luck to all...

Was thinking that this one might come close to a six. It is still early, but I am not holding out hope.

I see from my sub 5 score and a few comments that one of the following must apply:

a. Voters do not have a clue about real life chemistry.
b. I shot way over the heads of the average voters.
c. I may have missed some secret rules revealed in the forums. (Is there some requirement about showing a high school class? I'm really confused by a couple comments suggesting the image does not look like their high school chemistry class. ?????)

Just call me frustrated by this challenge and the apparent low voting DNMC people.

I think that there is some confusion about what criteria DOES meet this challenge. I don't think that it necessarily needs to look like a classroom (mine does bc that is what I do - hehe!). I thought that it needed to represent some chemistry concept or reaction. My shot is not staged as much as most of the others I saw (I actually did mine with my class), and I think I'm getting a lower score because of that. Right now, I'm at 5.6250. I tried a lot of other different chemical reactions, but they just didn't have the punch that I thought was needed for this.

sorry to hear that ralph, if your shot is as good as the others in your portfolio, it is surely underrated.

ETA: at the moment, I'm in 7 th heaven ;-P

ETA: ralph, I think, I just found your shot (8)

I got a comment that mine looks too staged. On other entries of mine I have been told it looks too much like a snapshot. We just cant please everyone.

This is one of the reasons why I didn't enter this challenge, because I knew I'd get a load of responses like that to my melting ice photo. As far as I can tell, this challenge was meant to be a photo of an event showing chemistry, but the challenge itself has been (poorly IMO) subtitled with "school days" and so people are going to look at the photos, not see a desk, and mark it a 1. Which is rubbish.

God alone knows what's happening in the geometry challenge where hardly any of the shots have a school relevance. Presumably they are all being voted DNMC. Either that or the voters are unfairly marking the chemistry shots down and then applying totally different criteria to the geometry challenge which had the same subtitle.

I was probably naive when entering mine but I truly thought people would realize there's a whole world of chemistry out there that isn't solely represented by test tubes and bunsen burners.. as you can see from my score, I was wrong to put so much faith in that belief!

I will readily admit that at first glance one wouldn't think "chemistry" by seeing my picture, but I figured that voters would consider the challenge it was entered in as well when contemplating it as it was taken specifically for the challenge. Maybe they don't believe there is chemistry at work.

At least some of the commenters seem to like the photo in general, its the chemistry (without a classroom) link that other's aren't making that's killing me. My fault for not going for the labcoat shot. Good thing I like it or I might be depressed! ;)
