Well, I can think of 3 different set up shots to depict irony,,, the catch?

None of them are humorous...

dang! I can see the not meeting the challenge comments now.

but I may go w/ one of them anyway

Irony by it's very nature is usually humorous. Soemtimes however it's merely thought provoking or a cause to reflect. Most politiacal cartoons use irony to do both (neither very well I'm afraid)

I don't think humor is neccessarily a required element of an ironic situation. If you have 3 ideas already, you are 3 ahead of me, so I say go for it.

I think this is a great theme - very thought provoking - and I really want to come up with something for this challenge.

hmm,
I usually don't think of irony as humorous in the sense that it makes me laugh out loud.

More a snort through the nose sort of reaction.

When I think of irony I think of "the cask of amontillado" by Poe or "Romeo and Juliet". Not particularly funny. If ya know what I mean?

Ahh but the challenge description indicates, this time is!
Hence my conundrum!

A sense of humor could be warped or even 'dark', you know? I wouldn't necessarily mark a shot down if it's ironic enough but not humorous.

If you have none, while others have three, it may be because you realize how difficult it is to achieve irony.
I'd say, you're ahead, so far. ;-)

Ahem,, and are you sying that because I do indeed have ideas for depicting irony,, I do not understand it?

I was jesting, sslickk. My post was motivated by a conviction that irony is a highly cultivated sense and impossible to achieve spontaneously unless incidental. Even incidentally... how could it be caught if not recognized and felt?

Irony, the finest sense, one for the few, not the many.

Jest recieved in good fun... <>

Yes, I agree, irony and ironic are two very misused words in American culture, and very difficult to depict visually.

verbal irony is much easier,, but somehow I think, typing it out and shooting that would be less than well received, no?

Most of the times I hear ironic used to describe a situation, it is usually being used in place of sarcasm or coincedence.

1) verbal irony, as you say, may be easier to achieve, when defined as you did 2). As a literary form and device, however, this definition won't do.

???

I'm not sure what you mean..
I was saying that I hear it used incorrectly as a synonym for sarcasm or coincedence.

I agree with this.

I shot this on Monday a few days too early to enter the Irony Contest. One of the many houses destroyed by Isabel in Hampton, Virginia. I didn't put the sign up but it struck me as funny. No one lived in the house at the time of the storm and it was for rent.

I think as long as my picture has iron in it, it will be irony.

irony

\I"ron*y\, a. [From Iron.] 1. Made or consisting of iron; partaking of iron; iron; as, irony chains; irony particles. [R.]

This is certainly a hard challenge...I have gotten a splitting head ache from thinking about this one...my brain is in over-drive and it is not used to that ha ha

I finally got an idea for the picture. I'm so happy.
09/27/2003 12:37:08 PM · #19
I got an idea, but don't think I'll have time to pull it off. :(

And, while on the topic of irony, here's my prediction/warning for all those snapshot haters: there will be at least 50% snapshots of things that people just ran across and thought looked ironic (like the Open House shot above by Sean). And I bet most will do OK, because they'll be things that are cute, clever or funny. But they'll be snapshots, none the less.

Isn't it ironic?
