Just noticed recently a lot of new people to the site. Here's some good information:
Good to read rules before submitting your entries.
Some tutorials that is helpful in your quest for a ribbon.
Help is also a good place to go for info.
Remember that we can't discuss any pictures currently in the challenge. It wouldn't be fair. We will happily answer any questions after that challenge is over. If you put a picture in your portfolio we can discuss it but please don't have the picture simliar to the entry.
If you don't like a particular entry don't just put "I don't like it". Tell them why. "Blurry subject", "Not sharp", etc. Tell them what you would do to improve the shot. "More contrast would make the flower stand out",etc.
Anymore input or hints from the purple shirted /w glasses members for the newbies?
A lot of times the people on the forums are being sarcastic they just forget to ;) :) or lol.

Good posting. There's been a lot of nastiness out there lately so I've stopped reading the forums. Makes me want to quit this site. Anyhow, might also be good to mention you should read Help > About in the nav so you get the idea of what this site is about and why it was started. Seems like it was meant to be... fun. :) |

Hi guys,
I am a newbie, and I joined for fun and to get some help with my photographs. I love this site and I also don't like the nastiness going on.
Where can I put my web site address so I can maybe get some hints on my photos on there?
Thanks talk to you later

Thanks, faidoi!! I became a member only a few days ago to learn more about digital photography. I am not disappointed! So far, I have found the older, more experienced members to be more than helpful and downright friendly!

You can post your photos in the Individual Photograph Discussion forum. You'll usually get more specific feedback if you select a few photographs from your site, but you're also welcome to post the url to everything if you prefer.

Hi Lisa. No need to read any 'nastiness' in the forums. 95% are kept in Rant. You can control that in your preferences. [My Home/My Preferences] It really doesn't go on all the time.
Also in your preferences you can add your URL to your signature and again people have the option to turn signatures on or off.
I'll check out your website later. :)

It is best to stay away from the rant forums unless you have tough skin. People can be pretty mean and sometimes not even realize it. The interet is funny that way. We can't see others expressions so we don't know if they are mad at the time of the post. And if we are upset then we can take someones post all wrong. I have done that before. I have learned from the past.
Please don't leave because of this. :-)

I must say I think it's much more civil around here than it was 6-9 months ago, but then we don't currently have a major skirmish going on regarding editing rules either.
Sonja's point is well made; the rant forum is definitely a place for only the thick-skinned. I consider myself darn thick-skinned, and I don't often go there.

Advice for newbies: Ask questions! Don't be afraid to show how inexperienced you are, we were all there once. |

I am a newbie and although I have only made a few entries I have learned so much about photography from some of the comments. I also read comments left on other peoples pictures and try to learn from this as well. I appreciate people taking the time to leave suggestions and comments. I read the tutorials and have found this site to be very helpful as well.

cool thread. I just now saw it for the first time. I think it would do us all well to remember that the issue/question brought up for the 459th time is very well the first time for some people.
The forums do seem a bit more civil these days. Of course, November is rapidly approaching.
