Does the Rebel XT have the ability to take IR pictures without modification to the camera. If so what filter is required?

Yes it can. You will need a lens that you can open the aperture up (like your 50mm), and most likely a tripod as the exposures will be quite lengthy

You will need a IR filter, which can be picked up at B and H or probably your local camera shop.

Any cheap filters :)

The NZ$ is not as strong as the US one!

now you've got me curious too, anyone got a link to a tutorial for this or a link to the actual filter you use for it? thanks!

I bought the HOYA R72 and it works great. I still have to get the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. I hear they work really well together. There is a thread that points to a tutorial. I will see if I can find it and post it.
