I am trying to export a Pagemaker file to PDF and I get a message that says it can't continue until I install a postscript printer driver. The thing is that I think I have successful exported to a PDF from my new laptop and positively from my other desktop computer. I'm not sure what has changed. I am using an Epson C80 printer and I went and reinstalled it's printer driver. While I was researching this on the net I read that this printer does not support postscript printing. Well I didn't know that. I could swear that exporting to a PDF has worked on this laptop but I could be wrong because it is very new. On my desktop computer I used an HP printer before I got the Epson and my only guess is that it worked because it recognized the postscript printer driver from the HP that was still installed even though I am now using the Epson. Does this make sense? Could this be what is happening and if so is there a way to install the HP printer driver on my laptop so exporting to a PDF will work and at the same time not adversely effect how my Epson printer functions? Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is for a paid job. I realize that I can still copy my Pagemaker file over to my desktop and make it work that way but my new laptop is way faster and I will be exporting up to 50 pages of text and images to the PDF. My 400mhz desktop may not handle that job very well. Thanks for any help I can get.

The Epson is probably now set as the default driver, even thought the PS driver may still be there. (I am assuming you're using Windows).

Go to the Printers Control Panel and select the PS driver as the default. AdobePS I think is what it's called. It should be on the PageMaker CD if not installed. You may have to configure the options. You can also probably do this within the Print Dialog box if the printer shows in a pop-up menu at the top.

On a Mac, go to the Chooser and pick either the LaserWriter or AdobePS drivers, and configure with an appropriate PPD (PostScript Printer Description) file.

Thanks Paul. I was unable to find the postscript printer driver anywhere on my laptop which is Windows based. Can I copy it from my desktop computer? If so, where would the file be? I see where the printer names are listed in the Control Panel but those are just descriptions right? I can't copy those right? I can't find the Pagemaker disk either. I may also look online as well.

If you still have the hp printer, you can install it to the lap top. When you want to print a PDF, click on file and then print. click on the hp printer, and print. you can keep the epson as your default printer

I actually gave my HP printer and all of the software to my brother but I thought that Paul and I were now talking about a default postscript printer driver that was separate from the HP printer driver.

Right, I'm talking about the "official" PostScript driver, which I think is downloadable directly from Adobe. It does not itself give you the ability to make PDF files. For that you need either Acrobat Distiller or another program like PageMaker, InDesign, or Illustrator from Adobe, or any of various others which have licensed and embedded the Distiller functionality.

You are right and I just got the driver from Adobe and now everything works fine. Thanks for your help, Paul.
