I'm thinking of buy NI. How important is it to get the version with 16 bit support? I do usually shoot in .raw these days.

Shooting RAW, your camera is capturing all the data (I think it's 12 bits/channel for the 20D). If you convert to jpeg in RAW conversion then 4 bits/channel are being thrown away.

If you convert to a 16 bit/channel Tiff then the NI version with 16 bit/channel support is needed to do noise reduction. Based on earlier discussions it is best to do noise reduction earlier in the process flow rather than later. This due to the fact that sharpening will enhance noise.

FWIW, also check out noise ninja if you are going to purchase a noise reducing software. While it's a matter of preference (I think), many people prefer the algorithm (or whatever it is) of noise ninja to neat image. This includes myself.

I use Noiseware Pro and am pretty happy with it.

Agreed, this is what I use and the control as well as quality is superb.

I've gone to Noise Ninja myself. I like it quite a bit better than Neat Image.

I was interested in buying Neat Image as well....now I think Noise Ninja seems better...

Do I need the more expensive version or is the home standalone version enough?

Like Neat Image it depends on how/what you use it for. If you shoot Jpeg, yes the Home version is enough. If you shoot RAW, you'll probably want the Pro version.

Whether you want to use it directly in Photoshop or not would decide if you want Stand-alone or Plugin.

Well, ask yourself this... do you have issues with noise in your images? Do you have to shoot high ISO? Do you work in low light much?

If noise is not an issue, I'd say save your money for more glass :-)

I have used both free & paid versions of NI as well as NN. I think both software is comparable. IMO, & my past use of NI, the only reason I got the paid version is so I can do batch processing & TIFF conversion. I did, go a really long time, say 2 years, with the free version of NI with no problems.

I use PS CS2 & I think that the noise reduction for each new version of PS gets better & better.

I would say try the free version out & see how it agrees with you & whether it meets your needs. If not, move on to the paid or try our NN.

Good luck!

What do you like better about NN? I'm ready to take the plunge for the 16 bit version of that or NI but am not sure which.

More control for one.

Also it's not QUITE AS BAD at producing that plasticy look in portraits, if overdone. It'll still do it, though. Either way you have to use it sparingly.

In my experience with 16-bit plugin versions of both products, NN is a bit faster.
