I am just buying A3 paper but am dithering on how much Matte/gloss to buy.
I am only going to be printing at this size for images I intend to display. Some will be behind glass, some just mounted on regular cardboard mounts (for competitions at a local camera club).
Because of this am leaning towards just buying matte finish, but should I get some glossy too, in what circumstances do you decide to print on gloss or matte? |

Glossy will give you a slightly higher color saturation than some of the matte papers, and some people say glossy prints tend to look sharper. The downside to glossy is the reflection that comes from the shine, and they show scratches and fingerprints more easily. If the print is for framing, I wouldn't use glossy because then you'll wind up with competing reflections between the print and the glass.
For black and whites especially, use matte. I've read that countless times, but of course now I can't find the link for you. The older matte papers were more textured than today's; the little bumps and valleys in the paper sometimes led to the impression that it didn't produce super-sharp prints. I've never found that to be the case with today's matte paper.
In my Smugmug galleries, I've all but turned off the gloss option for prints in favor of matte and lustre choices.
Hope this helps.

Personally,
I am a gloss person, my wife is a matte person, my mom she prefers matte, but will do glossy if I suggest it. :} I think its more of a personal taste thing. I think that Glossy photos look better and appear sharper then matte. I also love the feel of them hanging matted on the wall. As suggested they do show more fingerprints and scratches, but you shouldnt be fingerprinting and scratching your good work anyway!
