i think your photo amounts to not much more than a perversion of photography...you might as well have just taken a paintbrush to the people's heads and painted them blue. instead you used a tool and screwed up the people's heads and other parts of the photo unnecessarily. your photo is the perfect argument for the people you want more editing restrictions. and furthermore, why is it that you choose to single out volleyball players to make a generalization that is uninformed at best?

and after all that, you expect people to understand and like a photo that isn't even visually appealing?

There are plenty of "legitimate" artists who paint on photographic images for a variety of purposes.

I think you'll have a hard time making a case for rotoscoping or printmaking being "perversions" of photography ...

That said, you have every right to dislike the image on its artistic merits (or lack thereof), the inappropriate application of the technique, or the message conveyed. I just suggest you refrain from scattering pejoratives like buckshot -- you will likely maim innocent bystanders.

I'm not defending (nor panning) this particular photo, I just object to your attempt to make it a paradigm for a technique which wasn't even used.

My own comment was "Bizarre but funny," but then I've had a long time to incubate my cynicism ....

I have to say that one of my reasons for submitting this photo to DPC was to make the point that with the limited editing allowed, it is still possible to make a photo look like it has had a filter applied. I don't expect everyone to like it, so I'm not going to defend it. But as I said, I stand by it. I still feel that the editing restrictions should be relaxed, and then I'll feel more inclined to work on spot editing techniques such as dodge & burn, etc. in order to make a more 'natural' looking picture. This has always been a contentious issue, so this will be my last posting to this thread.

well if you had stated those intentions previously this wouldn't have become an issue. so now we agree :)

Hold on there buster, that is my next to last place photo you are talking about :) I happen to like it and I certainly will brag. When my kids were young, dumpster diving was an event that all the neighborhood kids did often. When I saw this guy diving in the dumpster I just had to take the pic. Actually it was more of a nostalgia picture for me but I would have got last in that one too. lol

I know I have a warped sense of humor and think WAY outside the box at times, and when I submit a photo like this I expect the negative comments and low score. BUT some of you did say it was funny, so if it caused you to smile.. just a little... it wasn't a failure and is something I can brag about.

Thanks Jon, I appreciated your comment during the challenge :)

I missed the Homeless Portrait thread before but just read through it and made some comments. I love your shot there.
