It is mentioned in the challenge description that it is a macro and close-up challenge. You do realise if we made it a true macro challenge that most people couldn't enter ? and for example, the Fuji S602Z can't actually take a macro shot without using additional lenses, so you probably haven't taken a macro shot either if you entered ?

i didn't enter because of that very reason, i didnt' have a good macro shot to submit. even with a macro lense, my camera isn't the best at true macro... which is why i thought it was slightly odd when i first saw the title of the challenge. I thought it would kinda limit the # of entrants, due to the equipment required for a true macro type of shot. i know there are some members on here that have excellent equipment for macro shots, and figured the challenge was going to be mostly that kinda stuff.

there are some submissions in the macro (& close-up) challenge that don't even count as close-up, however ... but i guess we see stuff like that in every challenge... that is, stuff that doesn't really meet the challenge description.

That's why the challenge isn't confined to true macros, but is more loosely defined as macro and close-up, as have previous macro style challenges, because most digital cameras don't really take macro shots, even if it has a 'macro' mode.
