Can some one tell me why nearly all challenge winners, have subjects that are ( excuse the term) in your face, but if a photographer steps back and give a wider viewpoint the image is not voted as well, even if it fits the challenge, and is of good quality.

What will the voters ever do with the "Image Without Subject" challenge, LOL?
It's no secret that filling the frame often makes for a more compelling shot. It's especially true at the image sizes we use for challenges, where subject detail is easily lost if the subject is too small. It's certainly not universally true, however; there have been many ribbon winners with lots of negative space, for instance.

Well, as Kirbic said, it usually makes for a more compelling image. Just like other 'rules' of composition, can they be 'broken' and still work? Sure, sometimes. But they are 'rules' for a reason, they generally just work. Especially in the context of our challenges here, I believe a lot of voters view an image for merely a few seconds unless it really engages them, then vote and move on through. So, you need every edge you can get to cause them to want to look longer. The longer the view, the higher the vote :-)

While not quite a winner, it was top 10. Probably the extreme limits of negative space.

Although, using an example from the "Negative Space" challenge isn't that convincing. lol

There are definately a couple well done negative space images out there though.
