Remind me never to let you borrow my camera :-)

This is the idea behind 4/3rds. A new digital from-the-ground -up system approach that involves, hopefully (from the standpoint of the consumer), many manufacturers offering products that will work interchangeably on all 4/3rds cameras. A lens made by Leica, eg, will work on a Panasonic or Olympus cam. The more manufacturers that participate, the greater the potential for a system that will rival that of Canon or Nikon.

Of course, because the 4/3rds system is small and mainly occupied by Olympus, there is risk of its folding. The verdict is out yet on it, but now that Panasonic and Leica have joined with Sigma and Olympus, there is greater hope that it will take off.

Also, not diss on Sony...they haven't really been good or bad to me..but you buy a system when buying a DSLR and I do get a little concerned when any manufacturer that is not as robust as say, Canon or Nikon in the design of their systems equate their DSLR's to Canon or Nikon. The body, the sensor and even the optics may approach Canon or Nikon quality but it is VERY hard to move vertically if the complete system has not been thought out.

Anyone contemplating their next DSLR purchase as a STEP into DSLR photography versus the one and only purchase of any DSLR they will ever make should consider a complete system approach. The resources available to the average Canon and Nikon user are enormous compared to other manufacturers.

Not trying to get into a brand war, just trying to give some educated and experienced advice to people just learning about DSLR's, which is what this site is about I hope :-D

This kinda story reminds me of how Apple computers used to be king in the personal computing market, and how a "poorly-written" GUI created in a car garage by 2 kids beat them and the rest is history. Not too long ago, Palm has monopoly of the handheld computing market. Nobody would buy a PocketPC because they have invested too much in Palm 3rd party software, and also that "Palm has the largest user base", but look again today and you see that Palm is trying hard to survive against the competition. My point is, having a strong foothold today does not mean you hold it forever. Who knows? Maybe a month later, Microsoft folds because Linux is then bundled with the application, making an OS an obsolete item.
