I think more than the completely off-topic threads, which are certainly plenteous these days, I mind the number of derailments of the on-topic threads which also seems to be happening with increasing frequency. I'm not going to post specific examples because I don't care to single out specific people but I don't think it's that difficult to tell. I, also, am not in favor of completely eliminating off-topic conversation or general banter but I think a modicum of disgression here and there might be nice. The forums are easily supplemented with chatrooms, PMs, online journals and other forms of more personal communication.

Heck no! I had a point to prove, and it wasn't photography related. :)

As far as what threads you post to, I think you missed the point or misunderstood it. I couldn't care less what you, personally, find worthy of typing about. You asked for an example, and you got one.

I don't want to ban General Discussion, or all non-photography threads (see my earlier post). I'd just like it better if they weren't all so dreary and depressing. Let's have some amusement! More "guess who beat me up while I was talking to my mom...and why I couldn't get a picture of it" stories.

Naturally, if I had any good ones of my own, I'd be delighted to try to entertain more than 2 or 3 people with them.

An interesting discussion. But lets not get too personal.
Can I speak for a person who sits in the middle.

(a) Personal - off photographic topics ! - I don't contribute much; a lot of them don't interest me but I occassionaly read them for a giggle.I have also been given some great technical advice.

(b) Dominanted by a few ! Yes - but thats ok - some of the people are funny; you get to know them more (even thou they don't know who you are), and it can be a social outlet of sorts. I can view them; join them or ignore them as I see fit.

(c) Challenges ! I must admit I am only entering the occassional challenge. I really don't think there is any problem with the theme set - it's just that I am extremely busy with work and life and I'm not putting the mental energy into them that I could. This will be a slump for the moment and in a month or so I''ll get right back into it (scoring those incredible high 4s and low 5's).

(d) People Leaving ! I would say that this site always has people leaving and new one's joining. That is just the nature of it. I remember reading an old posting (when I first joined) about a lecture in Photography (from the West coast of USA) getting very upset with people on this site because they wouldn't take on board his advice. He left. The site survived without him.

Bottom line. This place is what you make it. It can be social, learning, teaching, a place to display, brag, ask. Take and contribute what you want and leave the rest.

(Thats my 5 cents worth)

So you are happy with non-photography threads just as long as they're funny? Ok, so people are leaving because the threads can't compete with Seinfeld?

Can we have a 'reader thought this was funny' box for each thread then?

Or perhaps we could run each one by you and you could decide?;)

Before people get too upset about content or styles of threads, I want to make it clear when I mentioned threads with more social natures, I never said that they should be banned. So I hope no one is getting defensive without reason.

My main interest (which I am very aware will differ from others) is about the support photographically this site provides. Thus I enjoy the threads that are strongly linked in that way. I also find some of the 'off-topic' threads to be of interest and will follow those for a time as well. Its also clear that they are important to those who are involved with them and have created an inner community through them. I've spent enough time on the internet that I make it a point not to get emotionally invested in online communities to a large extent anymore but I can understand the draw of belonging and realize this is a personal choice of mine.

I guess my point is, I do not begrudge those off-photographic-topic threads, I was simply pointing out how prevelant they've become and due to that increase (merely perceived or not) my enjoyment in this particular area has declined. I know all about the ignore feature but I choose not to use it because I'd be ignoring threads left and right. I just hope to catch the other threads that may interest me before they roll off the main page.

I suppose if I had to pick something that I do find very annoying and counterproductive would be what mk mentioned. There are times that a thread I've been interested in has been deviated and turned into a mini private party.

I'm certainly not saying people shouldn't enjoy a thread or bring humor or make comments to it, everyone is of course welcome to make whatever contribution they feel they should. I just wish the percentage of legitimate "photography based" conversations that devolved this way didn't seem quite so high. I do freely admit the percentage probably only seems high to me because I do find it annoying. :)

Anyway, my previous post was simply a possible explanation why things might seem dead. As I said before, I still find things of merit here so I'm able to balance the good with the bad at this point. Hopefully everyone else can too.

No - I am simply pointing out that some people enjoy these interactions. Personally I don't join in them very often. I am more interested in technical discussions but unfortunately I am more a receiver than giver.
"Run each past me" - I wouldn't have the hide to pass comment on what people are allowed to post. I just ignore the threads that don't interest me - and look at the ones that may have some appeal. After all some non photographic threads appeal - other wise you wouldn't be in this one.

I've just started really paying attention to the forums... I think things are moving along faster then I can keep up. I can't image what it must have been like a few months ago if this is SLOW!

I think it's hilarious that you're all in a non-photography thread, talking about how non-photography threads are the bane of the site. LOL

I have a friend who optimizes web sites and does various other web-related things (key word analysis, etc.) to help promote online businesses. He says that every 6 months there are major turn overs as far as how search engines index online sites...every 6 months you have to change and grow.

Maybe this is just what is going on...the site is changing, the dynamics are changing. No big deal...

I used to be really into reefcentral.com and nano-reef.com and now I can't remember the last time I visited the sites, much less posted there...

People are moving on, changing jobs, going back to school, finding other hobbies.

I agree that the posts have been boring the last couple weeks compared to before but I need to practice my photography more than read these posts anyway.

Maybe someone more experienced can start another learning thread so I have some direction and guidance on how to improve my skills...Right now I am wandering around looking for inspiration that never comes.

Hmm... interesting thought, and it would be nice to find all kinds of "learning threads" about all kinds of photography-related subjects, but until someone starts a thread asking for discussion of a particular subject, the odds of one just "popping up" are slim.

It can take a lot of time and effort to create a learning thread, and until someone with the knowledge you want is aware of just what it is that you want, the likelihood is that they won't just up and say "Oh, I think I'll start a thread on the best lens choices for portrait studios" (or whatever).

My point is this:

If you want more photography related threads, ASK QUESTIONS. (And ask SPECIFIC questions, not just "how do I take pictures better".) You're more likely to get the answers you're looking for without just sitting there and feeling helpless or left out. And it would help to "redirect" the site back to more photographic topics rather than social topics.

Just my $.02.

Lessee...
Busy with back to school stuff, all my cars are falling apart so I am busy fixing them, was on vacation for 10 days this month, and somewhat feel lazy - i have 2 wedding albums to get started on and well, don't feel like it. I need one of these i suppose.

Not many (if any) of the challenge entries have me excited either. rope, pic w/o a subject, where is steve, stupid stupid... peas had some potential I suppose. mystery and magic appeals to many but not me. I have a free study entry in there though. a good one too - well, we all think that till the voters say 4.1 and they we wonder what we were thinking. ;P

I got insulted by a member here in a forum. that pretty much pissed me off and left me wondering if i want to be here. or perhaps if i'm wanted here. SC, if they did anything, did not achnowledge that fact to me, only reinforcing my growing apathy.

So there are many reason's I've been less involved in this site.

No, I know, I agree with what you said...I am just too busy right now to put forth a lot of effort with that. I don't feel hopeless or left out. I'd like to really focus on what I am doing right now with my camera and take tons of pictures and then evaluate the results and then ask the questions on how to get what I want out of my camera and learn techniques. I am strapped for time right now.

I am just saying that eventually I'd like to be part of a mentorship thread but I am not sure right now what I'd like to learn. I really need to get out and take pics and then ask for help...does that make sense?
