Even better... What does this shot have to do with Nostalgia?
This isn't sour grapes, I didn't enter the challenge. Just wondering what people saw in this image over the second place image (and others) that clearly defined an era a while back and left a very nostalgic impression.

Some lucky bastard who went to Burning Man, by the looks of it....Same structure...
Still, Burning Man ended on Sept. 1st, and this photo would have had to be taken after 9pm PST (Arizona is on Mountain Time, right?) on Sept. 2nd - more likely the third. This does not seem possible. As it is a first timer, I'd say there's some investigation to be done. Astounding photo, but quite possibly illegal...it could be that it was taken during the disassembly of everything, hence the 'nostalgia' title. Two days, though?

A sleeper apparently. The user joined on Apr 24, 2003.
I love a mystery :) But I also like the users camera.

Guys..
It certainly is very strange, but why start asking about anonymousity right now? I mean.. it should have been evident far before than that, that it can affect challenges heavily...

I thought this structure was some Turkish building or something and the girl was looking back "home". I was just amazed that such a photo could have been taken during the challenge - simply because all of the elements were just right. I mean, for me to capture an image like that would take a lot of timing and a lot of visits to the area, you know? It's a great photo - I don't necessarily think a new-b should be looked into for submitting a great photo on the 1st try - I've been here for a little over a month now and just entered my 1st challenge. I dunno. I love the photo and I don't think there's an issue, but I wouldn't be too surprised if this was taken before the challenge dates.

I hope i have not given people the wrong impression. I was just amazed when I looked at the winning profile and saw what i saw. Its a great shot and deserves the ribbon.
This was not meant to open up a can of worms.
Calvus - Glad you like the camera he/she is using !!

And you would know, wouldn't you!
I only know a little about burning man - did that structure get burned down at the end? Or dismantled? If not, this could have been taken after burning man ended, couldn't it? |

Yeah, it's clearly the temple at burningman and there was definitely a dust storm beginning of week and end of week (Sunday Aug.31). I don't really care about the dates, but I suppose it would mean a disqualification as the temple burns on Sunday night (Aug.31) during another ritual.

Yeah I don't really care too much, though I definitely could have come up with a better 'life' photo had I been able to use shots I had taken in the past. Rules are rules, after all...

I just noticed that also Dwight1973author of Circa 1870 registered on Apr 21, 2003 and, since then, he partecipated just to one challenge and won the yellow ribbon (now possibly is a red one, after the blue ribbon as been DQed).
Guess which challenge I am talking about?
Of course it could be a coincidence... but it really feels weird.... and it certainly has an explanation.

There are quite a few people who have had success here very quickly. Im not sure why you think that means something is fishy. This site isnt only open to beginner photographers. There is quite alot of differences in the skill levels of many people here. I finished 4th and 5th in my very first challenges here. Do you think I didnt deserve that only because it was my first challenge? As pointed out before, Vipermike entered 3 challenges, and he ribboned in all of them. Sometimes, its about the pictures. :)

fyi i had a membership to dpcontest.com for a year and never submitted one photo.
sometimes, for one reason or another, people sign up with sites and then never use them - too busy, or whatever ...

I think that the investigation on the picture of Redmapper started when somebody noticed that:

I just noticed that the same status applies to Dwight1973... and, yes, it does make things look very fishy...
One registered on 21 April 2003, the other just a couple of days after.
Both have never had any activity on this site until this challenge.
One gets 1st place and get DQed...
It can be just an enormous coincidence but.. what would you expect from the other one?
And, most importantly, how many fakes are we dealing with?

I just hate reading these conspiricy type threads, only cause they lead me to wonder what are the real intentions behind them. The winner that was DQ'd, was because someone recognized the place and put it together that it couldnt have happened in the proper time frame. The photogrpaher has issued a statement that he misunderstood the rules. One of the first things I do when I see someone complaining of anothers pic, is to look at their gallery and their vote percentage. Im assuming you dont think highly of the photography here, hence your 3.9 voting avg. I dont think this site warrants any kind of paranoia, the cream usually rises to the top, at least as far as the majority determines around here.
I joined the site, then waited 4 months to participate myself.

The cream should raise because it is cream, not because "thinks highly of the photography here".
The issues and questions raised are based on facts not on paranoia.

And just before going to sleep...
My "paranoia" started when I witnessed a coordinated action to invite people not to expose their preferences about other pictures than the winners in the public forums which were supposed to host such discussions...
It has little to do with photography and a lot with freedom.
The real one.

I thought a whole lot of other people decided to expose their preferences. Isn't that freedom ?
The fact that it highlighted the hubris involved in posting personal opinion threads to say what should have won is just a happy side effect. |

And having the wisdom and self control to not enter every single challenge, but wait till you have a potential winner. Unlike me, who enters whatever I've got... |
