they almost cost the same... which one would i buy...
of course a prime lense is unparalleled, but is 50 mm a decent walk around lens ? or does the 28-75 range really come in handy...
i prior quality over convinence..

I think it depends on what you mean by a "walk around lens"

Snapshots - get the 28-75, the zoom will come in hand and be nice for those spur of the moment not too much thought shots

If when you walk around and you want to really focus on great photography then I'd recommend the 50.

just my 2 cents ;)

Edit, I just gor a 50mm 1.4 a week ago (for Nikon) and I LOVE IT. for some reason it makes me feel much more creative, maybe it's that I have to work a little harder to get the framing right, maybe it's the razor thin DoF but whatever it is I love it :)

thnx Mega.. well i am inclined to get the 50 mm .. low light situations may be very common.. i'm just wondering is the 50 mm convinient when shooting say portraits, faces.. i don mind moving around to get the proper frame so long its achievable ...

Well I don't shoot a lot of people but for portraits, especially faces, I'd recommend something more along the lines of the 85mm 1.8

From a framing perspective, 50mm on an APS-C camera is near ideal for portrait work. The 50/1.4 will not disappoint in the optical performance department, unless you do astrophotography on full-frame ;-) IMO, the build quality of the 50/1.4 could be better for its price, but it's not really poorly built. It's kicked around my bag for 2+ years and still looks new, so from a practical standpoint it's hard to find fault.
I did have focus problems with this lens on the 10D, and have seen others report the same issues. On the 5D, I have no issues at all. YMMV.

A zoom is really good for photojournalism type shots, and landscapes.

Other than that, you can do great things with just about any focal length prime with some creativity. 50 is a pretty good lens for portraits, but you'd want something longer for candids if you don't want the subject to notice you.

I´d get the 50mm 1.4 if you are sure you prefer quality over convenience, also, the 50mm is very good for portraits, especially on a 1.6 crop camera and I used it extensively when I had one as my main camera. Still use the 50mm a whole lot even though since I got the 5D my favorite is now the 85mm, use the 50mm both for full body shots and waist up and just as a walk around and great for low light.

Well, it's two stops faster than f/2.8, so if you are getting a meter reading of 1/20 @ f/2.8, you'll be at 1/80 @ f/1.4. Quite a difference. Remember, the DoF is *very* narrow at f/1.4!

I've taken indoor shots lit with a single incandescent light at around 1/40th to 1/100th of a second or faster. It's fast.

Example 1/80 @ 1.4:
