If it were me, I'd chick the whole question and replace it with "How would you define the way you see?"

I'm more interested in whether people consider themselves literal or figurative, conscious or unconscious, structural vs found (built images vs captured images) and so forth.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for pointing out. It'll be an interesting reflection on my own photography style.

I guess I'm a rather "accidental" photographer who doesn't have a planned or "picture in my head" before embarking on a shoot.

Can be considered as impulsive and I do things at the spur of the moment..

The reason why I asked the question in the first place is...
I realized that the way I shoot has changed over the years... not that I'm not enjoying it..

I've improved... (I guess) and I'm happy about it..

My recent exposure with stock photography.. and the product shoots that I've done so far... has started me thinking that there are a lot of different types of photographers.

Some are better than others in ways and there are a group which are generally in the "undefined" category..

I'm probrably in that "undefined" category... lost...
and I find that I don't have a distinctive style...

Anyone felt this way? :)

Eric..

Me personally? I consider myself to be literal and emotive. In the work that I take seriously, I seek to explore the calmness and serenity I conceive to be at the core of things. These are qualities that I want to project in my work, very consciously, and I want to do it by finding and conveying this quality of the world around me.

Written on the fly, please don't pick it apart. I haven't really thought about it. And yes, this matches "zen photography" very well, and no I didn't do well at all in the zen challenge, and yes that bums me out :-)

i agree. i create images and "find" them too. I like clean and modern sometimes but my photos are a bit cluttered at other times. IIhink what I like varies from day to day, moment to moment. I prefer to concider it "well rounded" but it's probably more manic.

Even after bear's post, I still can't seem to think of "how I see", conceptual is still the word I have in my mind. But I'll try.

1-
The smallest thing in the world could trigger my fantasy. When I have an open mind at that point, ideas start ratteling through my mind. In a couple of seconds I've rejected 10 ideas and came up with one good one. It just hits me. If I have moments like these, the world could fall apart and I wouldn't even notice.

2-
In my head there will be all kinds of lightsettings, settings on my camera, where to take the shot, how to handle little problems, what do I need, where can I find that prop, etc.

3-
After a while i have the completed idea in my head, start to collect props, light etc. to do the shoot, use the settings I came up with during the second part of the story.

These stories can take from 10 minutes to 3-4-5 days. Doesn't matter. When the photo is like I wanted it, I'm satisfied.

In more specific, condensed form; you "construct" your images rather than "find" them. You are more cerebral than emotive.

had to check my dictionaries for the word "cerebral", but you're right.

I've always had problems with making a long story short :P

I'd like to consider myself a story-teller through my photos, but I'm still learning to get my point accross effectively. I'm not that hung up about techical perfection, but I do realize that it sometimes takes a sharp image or vivid colors or high contrast to get noticed. Thereby allowing the viewer to stop for a bit to absorb to "story".

Practically speaking, however, I just an average joe with an expensive hobby at this point, with dreams of greatness.

Not so average, and you'll get there. Have fun on the journey!

Based on Bear's questions/criteria, I'd have to say I'm literal and found (though not at all sure whether I'm conscious or unconscious). I like to take pictures that I see. I may see something while driving, walking, or riding, that I'll later go back to shoot. An example is the "Progress" entry - I'd seen that particular fence with that particular vine while riding - several times. Finally grabbed the camera and went out to shoot it. I've shot my "Zen" trees at least three times so far. Something I see there that I like. And on weekends, when I do have time to shoot, I may just wander around looking to see what I can see...

I'm more often on the literal side than the figurative.

I'm a little confused by the next two methods you describe(conscious or unconscious).

Definately more often structural than found. I generally have a strong idea of the kind of image I want to create, but not the main subject that I want to build around (if that makes sense). My challenge entries do MUCH better if I'm not wandering around tring to "find" my shot.

I can be right in the square literal or I can be so far out of the square figurative. My main talent - and curse - seems to be coming up with nice photos for the wrong challenge.

Didn't do well? you got a high score from me AND a broku! what more could you want? ;)

I'm a dilletante photographer. I'm in my head and I can't get out. I want to find my photos, or else I feel that they're not really there. But I want to get over this tendency, or transcend it.

p.s. SherwinJames when I think of a storyteller on DPC, your name is the first that comes to mind.

Actually, anybody that looks at your portfolio should be able to see that clearly without having to ask you.

As for me I would ditto what BradP said (jack of all trades, master of none). Although I'd like to master something at some point but frankly I doubt that will ever happen since my interest always tends to fade over time.

I'm the type of photographer that spends way too much time developing software.

99% of my photography is with black and white 35mm film. I feel completely inept with digital cameras.

My favorites usually happen when I try to photograph something and something else catches my attention. An accidental photographer?

I can tell you what I am not. I am not a people photographer. I am happiest when nobody is within the frame of my viewfinder. I am terrible at candids and struggle with portraits only getting good ones through sheer repitition.

I do have vision to capture landscapes and natural settings without trying. That is, I don't think "ok, rule of thirds, proper exposure, etc." I just know when the shot is right in composition and lighting. I can almost say that with each and every blue I have shot I could tell within a few seconds that it would blue.

I also like to try the "construct" thing where I create a shot. I used to think I was actually better at this than natural shots, but I've changed my mind. It's still fun though, and I enjoy trying to do things "on the cheap" which normally require expensive equipment.
