I made front page again. I'll have to pass all the credit to the Marines in the story though. I was just lucky to get the assigment. It was a sure bet for front page. Here's a link. (Anybody that can fix the link would be appretiated)

I also made B-1 with a graduation ceremony for the Police Exporer Program. I really impressed myself with my Explorer shot. It was captured quite well in my opinion. An critiques are always welcome though. Again, thank you so much to DPC for all of the help and knowledge you've passed on. I REALLY could not be at this level without the skills I learned from everybody on this site. So technicaly WE made the front page. (Sorry only I made the money though)wink wink...

I wonder why it didn't work for me. I did it the same way I always do.

"Order a copy of this photo. Visit our Photo Gallery"

Do you make extra money from prints then?

No, I wish I did. The paper gets the profits from any re-sale

You are using their equipment then?

makes no difference. what matters is whether or not you have a 'works for hire' contract with the paper, which basically states they will pay you for the assignment, but you turn over all rights to them.

btw, nice work, nick!!

Does this mean just the photos they print or all the ones you take on the assignment?

typically, it means all the photos you shoot on the assignment, whether they publish them or not. unfortunately, this is pretty much the standard for the industry. most editors and photo directors know it is a real rip-off, but not many are in positions to do much about it. and, if you try to go behind their backs, well, hey, if they catch you, they probably won't call you again...c'est la vie.

I'm a stinger so I have my own equipment. I can sell any photo that the paper doesn't publish. I have a pretty good relationship with my editor and she lets me do what I want with my shots. I have even sold a few that were published. I don't sell them to other publications just on a moral level and Skip is right they probably wouldn't call me back if I did. I will sell them to the subject of my assignment or even quite often just send them a copy or two for complimentary. It's good PR for myself. If they ever need a photog chances are good they'll call me.
