My usual "post your out takes here" thread (as long as they don't give away any clues to your entry).

Here are two of mine. I expected a lot more football shots than there were, so I submitted a non-football entry. Based on my score, I'm wondering if I shouldn't have submitted this one:

And seeing more than a couple "non-game-action" entries, I'm also wondering how this shot would've done? I also thought it might get too many "looks posed" comments:

This was my first time shooting sports, and like past challenges here at DPC, I took the challenge theme as an opportunity to try and expand my photographic "experience" as much as possible. I had a blast! I also gained a lot of respect for the "pro" sports shooter, since I learned first-hand just how challenging it is to capture good shots of fast-moving sports! Following a game through the viewfinder is no easy task...

I think the second shot is superb - doesn't look posed at all to me, more of a candid shot that captures the moment (the action of taking a drink) perfectly. Great framing too, especially as it's uncropped! A 10 from me.

Why the challenge had to be restricted to exclude/punish great shots like this is beyond me :-/

I am quite tight with my critera matching, but these sure meet it!

EddyG - I added a couple of comments to your shots. I like them both though the first one seems maybe a little bit static ? It is tough to get the action into a single frame though and you've done well to show the ball and have it all in focus! (I really struggled with that)

I shot my first football game on Friday night and would really love some feedback on the shots I didn't enter.

It was a late evening game so pretty quickly it was getting too dark to stop much action so I decided to give in an start trying to pan the shots. I really like this shot, but didn't feel it would score too well, because of all of the blur. I think it really captures the action and motion of the game, while still showing the ball, but would love to hear what people think about it. Does it work for you ?

Another couple that I liked, that don't give away my shot:

Gordon, I think that pan shot if probably one of the most unique looking sports shots I've seen. I really like how all the action is blurred, but the ball and the helmet are sharp! Good work!

I have to agree, that shot would get a 10 from me.

Gordon, I would have liked to see you enter the first one. I would have been interested to see how it would have scored too. I love it. How you managed to get the ball & helmet in focus with all that movement going on is amazing. It certainly nails the action part of the challenge, and captures the energy of the game beautifully.

The second one is a great study in patterns, a typical Gordon shot ; ). Prolly wouldn't have done as well in the challenge, but an excellent photo anyway.

No comment on the last one : )

I really like that image. The action and movement is wild. It's like a roiling ball of energy.

It's almost like you've transcended capturing a specific event and created an iconic image. nice work!

Gordon, I shall join the crowd and say the first one is a great shot, you should be really proud of it..... methinks you should have entered it...... it would have scored well from me.... and looking at the challenge as a whole I would have rated it close to the pick of the bunch....

Here are some shots I took at the Iceland vs. Germany game. These are not out-takes because they were taken on the 6th of september and the challenge started on the 8th. Just wanted to share with you. The game ended 0-0.

They are all excellent, but the last one is just great, with the keeper punching the ball. Extremely well captured and timed. Curious to know how many shots you take to get 3 great ones like these ? I know my hit rate was really low on Friday, partly due to my inexperience and partly due to the really poor light levels.

I got a few good ones as well. You can check them out here:

Actually my job at this game was to photograph the audience and their reaction. So my eyes were often at the audience when something good happened :) Got some good shots of them as well.

Great shots, Arnit. Incredible timing. Just curious...which lens(es) were you using? I'm going to try and do some rugby this fall, lots more of that than football (soccer) here...

Just an awesome shot...much better than a frozen, static shot would have been. You can feel it and hear it...

I'm using the Canon 70-200mm F/2.8 USM IS with a 1.4x extender.
