What do you think is a reasonable time to write a book. 3 Years, 3 months, or 3 weeks!
I have a book to my credit that took just 3 days!
I am not joking. You can find the same here. TAJMAHAL:From Dawn to Dusk

Well, a Lulu (self-published) book is a very different thing from a book published by a regular publishing house - there a book is worked on by many more people and goes through many more processes so it's only natural that it takes more than 3 days. Part of that is because the choice to publish it has costs and risks attached and a lot of money might be lost. Therefore it makes sense to ensure there are no errors and that it's the very best it can be. Self-publishing via sites such as Lulu does not carry any costs/ risks so it is a very different model.
Wishing you best of luck with the book - seems like a really fun idea!

Well, I had never heard of lulu and the preview I did of the book looked really cool.
I also checked out Kavey's web page and started to laugh quietly, while being totally impressed by the pictures. I have just set myself a project called "Modern Cities: Contrast & Contradiction", looking at the polarities inherent in the urban conurbations of today, all of which I was going to shoot in B&W in camera, not as a PS transformation. And then I saw Kavey's pictures: glorious!
This is a mind blowing thread for me in so many ways - thanks guys! :-)

Obsidian, Lulu are one of the most successful companies offering self-publication for authors, artists and so on who want to create and sell their work in book format.
When I was investigating options for a photo book I was creating (for friends) I looked into Lulu but they didn't offer the full-bleed option I needed plus I wasn't sure they were optimised for image quality over text. I went for an inexpensive photobook from photobox instead which worked out well for my needs but would love to see a photobook printed by Lulu at some point as I'd certainly consider using them in the future.
And thanks so much for your comments on my pictures - I should get a quote from you for the website - it's not everyday anyone refers to my work as "glorious". I take it the images of London were the ones of interest to you? Of course, mine were shot in colour and then post-processed to black and white - I always work that way because sometimes the images I think I will prefer in colour work better as black and white or vice versa. Anyway, thanks so much for your kind comments.

With my current camera black and white means just that as it does have a RAW mode. So it will be a challenge :-)
As to the images - yes, they were of the kind of image I am hoping to shoot but I would add the added complexity of showing the contrast or contradiction in a side-by-side shot, kind of like a diptych. As I said, glorious shots :-)
And you can quote me ;-)

Good job, Krishan! I have a similar (but not same) idea in mind from last one year but never got time to execute it. Your work is great and I'm really impressed with how you were able to execute, compile and publish (online) in just three days.
Btw, I saw a small writeup on your other book in "Better Photography" few days back. Congrats on being a known name :)

Yes, I found a Lulu email in my gmail list and I could not recall having heard of Lulu - apparently I'd even registered. I wish I had the time to really do something with it... |

Thanks Tejinder, that book (available only in India) is "Photography for All", published by Goodwill Publishing House, N.Delhi. This is perhaps the only book (in English) meant for Amateur Photographers, written by an Indian author.
My another book "Learn Adobe Photoshop in 7 days" is available online. You can find it here. Learn Adobe Photoshop in 7 days.

He he he Krishan, I know it's your thread... :o) how is the book doing so far? Can you track how many sales and where they have been live or do you just get that information at the end of the month or quarter?

I can see the information online after I log in. So far, only 9 copies of this book sold/ downloaded. It is felt that that the sales pick-up after about 3-4 months of publishing, as it happens in real world publishing too.
My another book Learn Adobe Photoshop in 7 days has been sold about 50 copies. |

I would like some feedback on the quality of photo reproductions in lulu.com books. I have heard that it's not very good. I'm afraid to try it myself until I find someone who can assure me it's worthwhile.

The converter at lulu.com converts the format to pdf, and we know that some quality reduction is inevitable. |

I'm at the same point. I've come close to buying someone elses photo book on Lulu just to see the quality of the images for myself. But then I figure I might as well put together my own, if I'm going to spend the $$$. I assume the images presented when you preview someones book online is of a lower quality than in actual print... these seem pretty lousy to me.

No. I have not purchased copies of my own book. Why should I? LOL.
The reason being that I am from India, and shipping charges in many cases are more than the cost of the book itself! Does it make sense?
