Unfortunately most of my older shots are now all archived, but here are two that were in my portfolio.

I guess that I made the wrong decision on the sky in Best Of... any other suggestions?

was the original image used for this:

I typically don't do NEARLY as much editing on my shots, but I really wanted this image to work, so I was willing to do what it took. Obviously, the first thing I did was to crop (the gray box shows where). Then I painstakingly cloned the black backrop into the places where it just wasn't big enough. Next, and also not easy, I cloned the logo off the shirt of the guy on the right. After that, I had a clean image to work with and the rest was just normal editing. The dumb thing is I did a fast & sloppy job the first time and had to do it all over again for the challenge entry.

Personally I'm not all that surprised. Most of the stuff on the left is cropped out and if I was describing the photo I wouldn't mention the floor under his foot or the little bit of muslin showing. I think the crop really took most of it out and you can crop out whatever you want.

Hmmm I just got the "Your image has been validated" email, again. I got one 3 days ago, and just now another. Did my image get reviewed again? Could it be DQd after it's been validated? I'm confused, but happy!

This is far better than anything I've gotten from Photomatix. The question is what this does to the noise level. Is it only pretty at 640 pixels or could you blown it up big?

I think I am going to order a large print from DPC Prints just to see. I'll let you know.

Yeah, apparently with the new advanced rules major element removal isn't such a big deal anymore.

But I bet if I did something like that I'd get DQ'd

Ah so you shot that in a car. Were you also pulling a BradP, i.e. driving at the time?

looks like a fairly major element removal to me. i seem to remember a Dr. Jones photo that was DQ'd for a light stand being cloned out. (i may be wrong...someone correct me if i am.)

You are right. Doc's shot contained a girl and a light and he removed the light. That is one of only 2 objects in the image, so was considered major element, I remember the discussion. I think this one passed because as you see once I cropped it only left a bit of muslin and floor in about 1/10th of the background and didn't even involve foreground items and so wasn't "major". That's my guess, I haven't heard SC explanation.

guys, the picture wasn't DQ's so get over it. This thread is on before and after and is much more fun if we keep it that way. If you want to comment otherwise then start another thread!

IMO that's basically it, although you were right on the borderline of legality. As cropped, a basic description of the photo would be "people on a black background," and that doesn't change before or after. There's a non-descript white shape on the right side, but it's more of a minor distraction than "a model and a light."

It's too bad he didn't leave the light in because nobody would have noticed.

Agreed- I don't think it would have affected his score much.

Thanks for the clarification, Shannon. I knew it was close, but the idea was worth taking the chance.

As penance for getting off track, I'll post one of my most-Photoshopped entries. Quite a difference from shot to final!

When I get a chance I'll post my cat photo as that was a major transformation.

Haha, no I was in the passenger's seat that time.
But on this occasion I was driving. You watch, headlines will say "Young Amateur Photographer Drives Car Over Cliff to Get a Better Sunset Shot!"...pictures on page 2 : P

gotcha. it's hard to tell from the small size just how much background you had to clone. no offense meant. :)

Gosh, not offended. This one was an extreme before/after, that is why I thought it might be helpful in this thread. We have a lot of tools at our disposal and learning how to use them and how much is too much is part of the process.
