do you HAVE to have these if you have an external flash?

I'm making my bday list and I've got an external flash on there, and a remote.

is better to have this item, he sync cable eventually toast your memory card

I've used a synch cable with my studio strobes for years now and have never fried a CF card with it. I strongly suggest using one rather than using your camera's onboard flash or another flash unit to trigger your remote flash.

If you are just going to have the flash mounted to your hotshoe on the camera you dont need one. If you plan to get a flash bracket or use your flash off-camera then you'd want the cable.

Right now I just plan on mounting it right onto the camera. I was wondering if that is okay, if it's going to fry my memory card then I was just going to have hubby order the whole shebang- flash, hotshoe and cable.

So if the flash is mounted right onto the camera is that okay then? I won't need them?

I know nothing about your camera but from my limited experience if you get a flash unit that is compatible with your camera then you should be safe mounting it on the hotshoe. It's when you go with a third party brand or an old flash and the power exchange is different that it can fry your camera.

On a side note, be aware that with the flash on top of your camera that when you do portrait shots your flash will be at the side, which is why a lot of people use flash brackets.

A hot shoe flash is designed to mount to the hotshoe on the camera. If you are using a flash bracket then the flash mounts to the bracket and you need a cable to connect it to the camera, but I don't think this is what you are doing, is it?

Renefunk is making some poor bizarre attempt at humor (i hope). You can't fry your memory card with your flash. that's nonsensical.

Flashes have a trigger voltage (4 to 400 volts) and each camera can take only so high a trigger voltage. Canon 300D can take only 6volts, 20D/30D 250 volts and most fuji cameras 400 volts. Newer flashes have lower, safer voltages. If the flash trigger voltage exceeds what tht ecamera is rated for you will burn out the camera's circuitry for trigging the flash.

Cable wise..are you talking a hot shoe extension cable (which allowd you to keep using TTL functions) or a PC cord wich is generally used with studio flash? Just mount the flash to the camera's hot shoe and skip all cabling.

it's working for me lol

okay see if this works
cable
flash

Amazon doesn't have the hotshoe but I can order it through Olympus. So basically if I'm understanding this right, if I'm mounting it directly to the camera I DON'T need the hotshoe or the hotshoe cable am I correct?
