Amen
The whine-tittin' gets real old, real quick. Thank goodness for the ignore button! (still waiting for that ignore users button tho :) |

I don't think it is forcing people to recieve comments when that is one of the biggest parts of the site. I seriously doubt anyone has joined not knowing or expecting to get comments. It's like saying a radio station is forcing you to listen to their music when you're the one that tuned them in expecting music. There are other choices out there and while I agree some people can be down right mean and stupid in their comments, you come here expecting them.
I would agree to a options button that the member would select stating he/she does not wish to see posted comments. This way the voters don't know the difference and the photographer can stay anonymous, just as a bagged commenter can.
I also would like to see ALL comments hidden while voting, I don't think it is necessary and can sometime cause issues with the people receiving them PM'ing the poster.

Actually, it's more like going to a hamburger joint and being forced to eat a side of coleslaw, even though you don't like it. And even though the coleslaw took a lot of effort to prepare, you just jam your finger down your throat and puke it back up all over the table.
But whatever. ;) |

I finally realize why I love mk so much...she puts everything in words and visuals that I can understand completely. ;)

I wonder, though, if those people who are complaining about the comments they are getting would really check the "no comments, please" box. It seems like they do want comments (or at least they think they want ocmments), they just don't like the particular comments they are getting. I think there's a difference between saying "I don't want to receive any comments" and saying "this comment I just got is a load of crap." And it is the latter kind of complaining that I seem to see most frequently.
BTW, nice visual, mk. Crystal clear :)

Fair question. I support the idea as I don't want to comment on a photo if the photographer couldn't care less - I can use my time to comment on another photo where the comment may be appreciated.
PS: I appreciate all comments ;) |

What about instead of a "do not comment" button, a "hide comments" option? If the photographer doesn't want to see what people have written, then he can just turn it off for that photo. It doesn't stop the comments from coming in, however, should he decide to take a peek someday.

but can the voters/commentors be made known of that chosen option?
So, like mk said, commentors dont have to waste their effort on those photos |

I think that when a person goes to submit a photo to a challenge, a big screen pops up with big bold writing that says-
Hey, Honyak, you are submitting a photo to a PUBLIC contest where people will vote, analyse, study, pick apart and comment on the photos. Opinions vary, some people may like the same photo that others may hate. No matter how good or bad the photo is. You MAY get comments on your photo. Some MAY say how good it is, some MAY say how much it SUCKS! LIVE WITH IT. If you don't want the risk of having your heart broke, or can't take negative feedback, DON'T ENTER! Just go show your photo to your mom and aunt millie, and they will tell you how much they absolutely love it, and how fabulous it is. Thank-you and...good luck in the challenge :-) |

I've got a suggestion for photographers during submission:
[_] I'm sensitive towards negative comments, so praises only please
[_] I can take negative criticism, but don't make me cry
[_] I intended this photo to look this way, so spare the suggestions
[_] I dont care technicals, tell me if you like the composition/subject

That type of thing has been suggested and I do think it is a good idea to have something to tell voters not to waste their time. |

Yeah, I guess they needed something "subtle" to inform the voters about it. maybe we should tackle it in a different way. maybe we should create a checkbox for people who welcome comments instead? same as the one for the CritiqueClub, but is meant for simply comments without rules or guidelines. |

Either way, ONE checkbox indicating a desire to receive comments or not does not seem like it has any downside and may actually end a lot of posts about comments. ...I doubt that, but it couldn't hurt. |
