We recently returned from a trip to Ireland. While there, we were running short on memory so we went to a pharmacy (of all places) and they transfered the pictures to a CD so that we could clear our memory cards.

When we returned home, I transfered these pitures from the CD to my hard drive and I edited them in Paintshop Pro which I do with all my pictures. When I try to save the picture, it keeps asking me if I want to save the original picture. I always say "yes" because I still have the originals on CD. However, it won't actually save it. It won't let me save it under a different name either.

I checked the file attributes to see if they were set to "read-only" but they're not. Has anybody else had this problem or know what to do?

Try saying no?

I did. I tried to save the copy on my hard drive.

Saying "No" doesn't save it then.

Maybe the CD isn't rewriteable? (assuming you're saving back to CD? I was unsure by your post)

Open image in the editor, select all, copy, open new file, paste, save new file. Works in Photoshop anyway...

I'm not trying to save it on CD. I'm trying to save it on my hard drive.

Is it a jpeg or some other format?

Have you tried my suggestion? You just copy the image and paste it as a layer in a new file, and that file will be savable, at least in Photoshop.

Sounds like a blip in the software, have you tried with a file from somewhere else?
07/17/2006 04:21:04 PM · #13
You have, in effect already copied them to your hard drive, I would try renaming them and see if it allows, if not there must be some sort of attribute preventing this so change the attributes?
Bear in mind if it is for a challenge you must submit your original if needed.

Sounds like they are locked. In Internet Explorer go to File then Properties and check if the Read Only box is ticked, if it is then untick it and it should be okay

Bear, I just tried your idea but it didn't work. It's like the file is read-only but it's not. I can make all the changes I want to it but I just can't save it. The only pictures I'm having trouble with are the ones that came from these CD's.

Right Click on one the files go to -properties- and see if the READ ONLY box is checked if it is uncheck it.

Bear's suggestion should've worked. You're not working with the original file anymore, deosn't even matter if that file was read-only, since you've copied and pasted the pixels into a totally new empty project or canvas. Any chance there isn't much free HD space available?

In any case, to be 100% sure all the file have the read-only flag removed. Would multi select all the files in the folder and then click Read-Only in the properties, to re-apply the flag, click ok, and repeat to remove the Read-Only flag.

I tried changing it to read only and then changing it back. It still didn't work. As far as my HD, I have about 12GB free so that is not the problem. Could I email a pic to someone and see if they can do anything with it? Or maybe it's just a problem with PSP.

Probably something you tried already, but you have "Save", "Save as", and "Save Copy as". Have you tried all three of these?

Are you trying to save in jpeg? Did you change the image to duotone? I know in Photoshop if your image is not in RGB mode it will not allow you to save as jpeg...

Sounds like a pebkac....

Did you figure it out? Sorry I couldn't try it sooner (after you sent the file). I had no problem saving with and without edits, to a new location and over the original.
