OK, I'll play. I took some shots that I was really happy with. I'm almost certain one of these would be getting a better score than the one I entered (decent score but not off the charts like I was hoping ;) ) ....

At any rate, they're fun to share. What do you think? :-D

Mag, wingswept is spectacular and would have been one of my top ratings :)

Edited to add this:
It's still spectacular, but at a closer glance I realized it's a "pin-up". :) I would've still rated that high, but maybe not quite as high.

Magnetic,

Wingswept is FABULOUS. You would have had a top rating from me as well -- no doubt about it.

I can not get that smooth background blur with my Sony. If anyone has suggestions please feel free.

No SLR needed for that ,just camera with macro and clean background.

I didn't say I couldn't get a macro, I just can't get it as good as the SLR's. With the largest DOF, my sony still does not give the same smooth background that the SLR's give. I also tend to have more noise. Hey maybe I'm just trying to talk myself into one....

One of the reasons I joined DPC was for the level of intelligence displayed...that said, I have been complaining about titles that are the only connection to the challenge. Congratulations to all for titles that are fun, funny, intelligent and for images that don"t need them. Some of these outtakes are fantastic as well...

Love the graphicness (a word?) of the pattern beetle. The shimmer fly has some lovely colour and wing swept is also cool. Alien Lifeform is plain freaky.

Your outakes stick they're worth 9-10 a piece so thats like between 108 and 120 total score -- not bad for one challenge ;-)

Can you attach filters to your camera? If you can, then there are two things you can do to improve your DOF and get more blurred backgrounds. First, look for some macro loupes/lenses/filters/diopters (I see them called so many things, I don't know which, if any, is correct). Anyway, they look like a filter, but act kind of like a magnifying glass. They give you two advantages: you can get a good focus closer to your subject, and they narrow your DOF, improving the blur of the background. They are rated in "diopters" and you can usually buy they in sets with a +1, +2 and +4 diopters, which can be combined for anything from 1 to 7.

The other option, a little more complicated, is to mount a reversed 50mm lens on your camera. Basically it involves getting a male-to-male adapter ring (and possibly step-up or step-down rings) and screwing the filter end of a 50mm lens onto your camera. When mounted backwards, the lens acts like a powerful magnifying glass. This site discusses how to do it.
