I have the same issue that you are experiencing. For years my left arm would get numb while I was sleeping, and as time went on it became more when I was also relaxing when awake. It never occurs when I am working out or performng any strenous activites. I believe the post that indicate a possible issue with CTS or the ulnar nerve.

To be on the safe side you should go to your Family Physican and have your vitals checked and have them do some blood work to see what your Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Levels are. I know for myself they were some what high and I have now gotten them back to very low numbers. You never want to take the chance and have it be something that is connected with a possible heart issue. Like everyone else has said if these issue are all clear then seeing a chiropractor or even a neurologist might be the best bet.

I have a very similar problem that occurred 4 years ago. I woke up one morning with shooting pain down my right arm. Numbness in my fingers. And the pain was aweful. It took about 4 weeks for the doctors to go through the testing to try and figure out what it was. I could feel it start in the middle of my upper back/neck area go over to my shoulder and down to the back/inside of my elbow and then sometimes down to my fingers. The pain was so severe I was taking 1800 mg of Ibuprofen a day just to make it through the day. And I wasnt sleeping much at night. They finally did an MRI and found a protruding disc in my upper back/neck area. Cant remember the number right now. They said I had 2 options either it was going to scar over and the pain would subside, or they would do surgery and clean it up and relieve the pressure on the nerve. I was ready for surgery until they informed me they are going to fix a problem at the back of my neck by going in from the front! Umm why? But anyway I was reluctant to do that at the time, and woke up one day realizing that I had slept all night and that my arm didnt hurt. So I havent had anything done, it scarred over. However occasionally I can move and feel it put some pressure on it and I'll have pain for a few days. It needs to be taken care of, but I am chicken and have other things I want to spend money on, besides me.

My fiancé just had a similar surgery last week, on C5 and C6 to remove two ruptured disks that were all the way into the epidural space and damaging his spinal cord. His arms were both numb and tingling, and he had no feeling in the last three fingers on either hand. They went in through the front, which sounded horrible, but he went home after 24 hours and had no neck brace or anything. The surgeon said they go in through the front to make the recovery easier, and the surgery itself is easier for some weird reason. I found a poster of the procedure (or at least one similar to it - this one shows bulging disks in the front of the neck instead of the back, but the procedure is the same I bet) that shows what they do:
