Morgan, your idea in general is pretty good. Sub-identities are great when you have a very high number of members/users and a relatively small number of identities. If you have the opposite however like here, with a relatively small number of users (who regularly participate) and a large number of different cameras, the "groups" would be spread much too thin to be effective.
Example, how many 10D users are there that participate regularly? That would be your group for special challenges, may 10? Then you have so many cameras, you'd have the ACME Camera challenge with 1 person in the challenge so that person would automatically win.
However I like the other idea where you'd have a challenge based on say, your average score. The range would have to broad enough however so there are enough entries and it's not too easy to win. So maybe a challenge for avg score of 1 to 4. Then 4+ to 5, 5+ to 6, and 6+.
Another idea would be different challenge types (which has been debated heavily), where you would be able to use any editing and the idea would be to create "digital art". Challenge examples: Sketch - "Use PS to create a sketch of any animal of your choice." Or Cartoon - "Use your skills to create a cartoon character". Or Fine Art - "Use PS to create a painted/painting effect". That type of thing. This would open up a whole new demension to DPC. This would be the best "Sub-group" because I don't think it would too exclusive or specific, leaving both groups (current, and the digi artists) relatively large and participating in both. This would also open up new forums that are for the new group where people would discuss techniques they use to make the pics. The forum would be called "Digital Art" to begin with. If the forum gets to busy, you could break it up into "Digi Art - General", and "Digi Art - Questions and Answers", blah, blah. I think it would be really great, and would attract tons of people to this site. :)
