I missed it in voting, but would've given it a 9 or 10. I just added to my fav's and it may be the only flower I have ever fav'd. Screw the scoring (which isn't that bad) - you are happy with it and, most importantly, I love it. ;-)
If I never see another flower again it will be too soon for me. ...unless it has fangs. :P |

I'm just confused.
It took me so long to set up this shot, to take the shot and I thought I was being super creative.
Where did I go wrong? |
Geeze I wish all of my nightmares would end up in the top 1/3 of the challenges and end up 5.7 or higher. Although I understand you think it should have done better. Lets look at this with the numbers. It scored higher then your average recieved. It scored higher then the average of the Challenge. And you recieved several great comments. I think you did well and should be happy.
Highest Score: 7.682
Your score : 5.791
Avg Vote Received: 5.6348
Average Score: 5.522
Lowest Score: 3.963
BTW I scored this image a 5, although its creative enough. I dont think the image is sharp enough and has enough detail in it to give it the WOW factor that images need to score in the 7's.

I'd have given this a 5 or 6.
The idea is good and original, but the lighting isn't that good, the petals look neat-image smooth, the composition is to centered and lacks depth (is to 2D) and I don't think that the red on black works well. For that I'd give a 4, but the idea is good = 7, averages to 5.5, thus a 5 or 6 depending on the competition. IMHO.

For me the image was conceptually outstanding but technically so-so. It suffers especially from oversharpening, which can be seen in the unnatural-looking teeth, and there's some sloppy artifacts around the lower lip that bespeak poor selection management. The reds are oversaturated to the point of plasticity in some places, also.
So I think you got some middling votes that could have been higher if it were better processed, probably. And, as others have pointed out, the absolutely centered composition is going to turn some voters off. Plus, also as has been pointed out, there are some people who just don't want to SEE "carnivorous" imagery in a flower challenge :-)
For what it's worth, I liked it a lot; brave shot!

I thought the whole thing was made of clay, not a real person's mouth. Could others have seen this as a joke flower purchased at Spencer's Gifts and photographed? |

Most of the ones that scored above yours have super bright colors, contrasting colors, and textures. I think yours would score higher with one or more of these elements.
I would've given an "7" for originality, but have not voted in a long time. |

I gave you a 5 in this challenge, but not because you went outside the box, I like that aspect of it. I thought the lighting was a bit uneven. It is quite dark at the top and the top teeth are much darker than the bottom. It also just didn't really have anything that moved me to go "Wow!" - except the interesting aspect of having teeth in a flower. The composition, while symmetrical doesn't really add anything to the feel or the mood. It feels too sterile. I want more from a gritting-teeth-flower.
Of course it would be great if we could be judged on how we did our setups. Reading your explanations makes me really appreciate the picture a lot more and I probably would have voted higher knowing that, out of sheer admiration for the difficulty of it. But unfortunately that's not how it works here. (I wish for the same thing sometimes myself.)
I wouldn't say your photo did poorly. It did a lot better than most in the challenge, and better than I did.

I really liked the photo, it's whimsy and creative. Gave it a 7. I didn't think it was a photo manip, even because in the advanced editing challenge you can't combine two different exposures anyway. The only reason I didn't vote higher was because of the image clarity, didn't like the moir effect on the petals. Maybe it was cropped too much or oversharpening or a low JPG quality setting was used.
And what about it not being a real flower? the challenge was supposed to be all flowers, it didn't say it had to be a real. And if you're going to DNMC that pic, then might as well give one to the Red ribboned entry too (just using that pic as an example, it's a great shot). |

To be honest your image is very nice, and wonderfully done. With that said it scared the crap out of me and I will never look at a flower in the same way. Then I saw this image :
And now I am having nightmares about killer flower ladies that are coming down from space to suck the photosynthesis out of my brain. |

if this was a nightmare, what would you call the 252 images that finished below it?
It's a well done creative image and scored better then most of the photos in the challenge. I think it finished right about where it should. Good job. |
