(I apologise for putting this on a photography website, I know it's terrible but it was my only side shot!)

Ok, so this isn't a great photo... but the bug in it is very wierd. I'm not sure if its a wasp or a fly or something else. It was about an inch and a half long.

This isn't an insect...I guess...but they have sure played havok on my tomato plants this year! The dreaded "Tomato Worm"...killed only by cutting in half with scissors or waiting for some special wasp to be born and eat them!! Right!

Edit to add that they are as big as my index finger...on the GOOD hand!! heeheeheeheehee

rscorp, your bug looks like an evil villain. How'd you like to wake up with that on your nose? lol

Here's a few more:

Isn't that a caterpillar? It's insect larvae so it still counts =)

I don't have any insect shots right now- well I have a butterfly in my portfolio.

But eeek at the tick shots lol. Our daughter had one in her and we couldn't get the head out. I HATE ticks and they're so bad here this year. I don't think they ever died from last summer.

seriously, missinseattle. I was having a minor stress attack. I'd never evern SEEN a tick (i'm in the suburbs of CA) and all of a sudden there was one in my head! I had to wait for my stepdad (who's from oklahoma) to get home to pull it out. It was also the only one around here that carries lyme disease. I didn't get it though. Whew!

I seem to take a lot of insect photos - I even took some today which I haven't edited yet. Here's another couple from my portfolio...

tejinder, awesome shots. I wish I could find a blue and yellow grasshopper in a purple bush. The insects I find are always somewhat camouflaged (damn natural defenses). Maybe this summer I'll come across a large red and blue butterfly on a bright yellow sunflower (maybe I'll accidentally catch a large meteor in a picture too - yeah right lol)

I did one time get a spider catching an ant up close, it had just grabbed the ant with its front legs... it was awesome but it got lost when a particularly malevolent virus got onto my hard drive.

Thanks, Brad! I was just lucky to find this lazy guy on purple leaves. The good part is that he was not scared or was too lazy to me, this gave me chance to take couple of good pictures. And to add to it my camera is good at macro shots (but sadly, its good at macros only :( ...damn P&S).

Oh yes, we have the lyme disease issue here as well. Deer Ticks carry it, but even other ticks like wood ticks can carry things like yellow spotted fever. They say if you can't get the head out it needs to be removed because the longer it is in, the higher chance there is of infection spreading. We actually ended up taking our daughter to the ER that night. I'm not one to rush to the doc or rush her in, but I called the nurse helpline asking for advice on how to remove the thing. We did as we wre told and the head got left in there. called them back and she said if we couldn't get the head out to take her to the ER.

Boy, that tick was expensive lol. Thank goodness for insurance!

I know... should not admit this, but I like bug pictures.

I've talked about this one before but my favorite bug story is for this image:

I was out taking pictures of cactus blossoms one day when I saw this great big termite-like bug. I chased it all over the place. I have to get within an inch or so to get a decent macro picture of anything and it did not like me getting that close. But I was persistant and got this shot. :)

Later, louddog at DPC told me the insect is a Tarantula Hawk. No big deal. It is just the most VENOMOUS insect in all of North America. That's all. And I chased the sucker all over the place. Me, who hates bees because they sting. :)

To procreate what it does is fly up behind a tarantula, which itself is a huge venomous and scary spider to start with, and immobilizes it with its sting. Then it injects its young into the tarantula and buries the spider in the ground. The young then eat the immobilized tarantula until they grow up. Fun stuff, don't you think?

Yup, I chased that sucker all over the place to get a 1 inch distant macro picture of it. Smart, huh? LOL!!!!

stdavidson, I do the same thing all the time. I get my fingers within a couple inches to get photos of insects and such not knowing what they are. Luckily I know what most of them are and generally it's not that hard to tell by how an insect looks whether it's dangerous or not as long as you watch the discovery channel alot =]

Your bug is pure black with bright red wings.. looks like a spawn of satan or something stephen king dreamed up. I would have thought it packs a bit of a punch but I probably would have chased it until the sun went down to get a shot of it too lol. Great shot btw.
