The skin texture looks odd. You have rough texture under the eyes and the rest of the face is smooth, yet you also have the stubble, which is very rarely smooth. Thus you have stray black hairs in very smooth skin, which is pretty unrealistic.

too much neat image (or similar) for my taste, but other folks here don't mind that at all. otherwise, nice lighting etc.

I agree with the observations made here. I think you need to go all out one way or the other (full blown artistry or realism) and also choose wisely which subjects to go this route. Here this guy has facial hair and that subconciously makes me want to see rough texture so smooth here probably wasn't wise. However that is not to say it can't be done I just think if you go that route you need to go all out and have the right subjects for it. Here is a perfect example of smoothing used effectively:
Heck, I don't even know if she applied any neatimage but the look nonetheless looks smooth but it's effective here.

Btw, what are you trying to achieve with this edit? I just noticed your original which is good maybe just a bit too bright.

Yup it is looking a little smooth...
Some times when you want to go smooth (possible to cover things up) think and try soft. The challenge was Advanced so there are a few more tricks you could use.
Take your shot (and as yanko pointed out) add some contrast on the darker side.
Create a Gaussian Blur Layer (pretty hefty blur (I use Digital Image Pro and set mine to between 12-18))
Adjust the transparency just til it is soft but sharp (in DIP I'm right around 48%)
Flatten the Image and then here (from your original challenge entry)
I actually went in and dodged and burned around the eyes.
Gaussian blur will work wonders a lot of the time.

yeah now that i look at what awpollard just did, i dont like the smooth at all, but i do really like the contrast change and the dodge and burn done on the eyes. i dont think that i like the soft feel either now that i look at it more....
Again thanks for all the help you guys are great.
