I agree totally. As to comments, I take any of them with relish and joy that somebody actually commented. Thankfully nobody has really come back at me with a whip saying I am unkind with my comments, even if I say I find the subject ordinary or not very interesting. I figure that is just as valid as technical stuff. If more people actually said in their comments not what is wrong with it, but whether they find the subject boring or uninteresting, that would be a great help to those of us who can't seem to find a decent subject to photograph.
I really have a lot of trouble with subject, and have finally wizened up and have gotten it. Since I don't travel much and basically shoot subjects within walking distance, I have finally gotten it that most find them boring. So I won't be entering challenges unless I actually go somewhere or get something beyond "ordinary." I just wish more people had actually told me that. It wouldn't have taken 67 challenges to finally conclude that.

"I totally agree with Frisca"

I'm glad Frisca brought this up. I'd love people to take those words to heart, and hopefully encourage more people to comment.

On my "Desolation" entry, there was a comment that really upset me at first. But after thinking about it for some time, I realise I probably learnt more about my photos, and indeed competing in these challenges, from that comment, than from a lot of the short positive ones.
(You can see what I learnt from that comment by checking out that entry on my profile - I added my own comment to it).

Any comment is a good comment (especially after receiving 90 reasonably positive votes and 142 views and only 2 comments on my "Motion Blur II" entry...)

Any comment is better than none. Yes, I would have to totally agree.
Sherpet, above once stated simply. "I don't like modern architecture".

Well, my first thought was well then don't vote on it! Grr-grr.
But, maybe we have to read between the lines of some comments. Since we are photographers, not writers, we may not express ourselves as well in writing, perhaps.

A person's dislikes are a percntage of the demographics of the DPC voters, which is a subset of everyone in the real-world out there.
Popularity of certain subjects and moods/colors, do make a difference.

So if someone doesn't like cats, they shouldn't vot low just for that reason alone, but their opinion counts.

I guess its safe to assume that this thread is over the other guy crying about his water shot or whatever it was???
06/27/2006 11:20:29 AM · #42
I think Frisca's post would easily apply to a good number of threads.

For the 'oh censors forbid' crowd, I refer you to mk25.

I have to say that not only do I agree with Frisca regarding complaints, i also agree with alfresco regarding locking threads like the ones mentioned...

With reference to this comment I made in this thread, first of all I totally agree with what is said here.

I really try to look at each image in it own right. I then ask myself if I like or dislike the image, re its first impact. Thats when I may say something like I quoted here "I don't like for modern archecture". In saying that, it would not have affected my score.

I try and always score on the quality of the image, and if it suits the challenge.

My next point it that I really do do a lot of voting and commenting so occasionally run out of words to what I say, re comments.

I really try to be fair, and try not to hurt anyone feelings. That is important to me. I also try and look at the comment to make sure if it were a comment to said me, did I learn something.

I do believe we all can take heart in this thread, and learn to be a better person, re what comments we leave, as it can leave a lasting impression.

I certainly will try and not leave personal comments, but instead leave comments of encouragement.

Bumping.....this thread, as I don't want to be the one that "kills" such an important thread, as this one.....

Tygerr - congratulations, you are so right, even a DNMC comment is helpful. I just read your thoughts on the comment left on this image of yours, its a pity that not everyone realises this...

Well it seems not enough people have read this with all the new posts after rollover, so I'll bump it back up so maybe they can now take the time to read it and take it to heart!!!
