Ive tried but seem to be having trouble getting the backgrounds of images fully black, especially on longer exposures. Take this image for example... ...the background is all black but you can see from the reflection in the bulb there is is plenty of light in the room - how is this sort of thing done? |

if you build a lighttent you shouldn't have that problem anymore for shots like that.

This question gets asked a lot and maybe needs to get on mk's FAQ page. :P
As Megatherian mentioned a light tent would work great as well as a just hanging a black color cloth in the background. The further away it is the better and also don't forget even if you don't quite get a black background it's not hard to make black in photoshop with a simple curves adjustment.

Reasonable quality Black Velvet is the answer it just soaks up light and lets very little out...
... just don't forget to buy a lint roller at the same time :)
