i do, because mainly because i had a friend who bought an original rebel, and i loved it when i got to try it. i never even thought about another camera. Also, i want to get into action photography, and i feel that canon has the best camera for it - 1d Mark II. when i was saving for the 20D, there really wasn't anything like it by other companies for the price. |

I started the DSLR world with a 300D which i bought because it was pretty much the least inexpensive, newish, camera, from a top tier company on the market. After awhile I just stayed in the Canon house. I'm perfectly willing to jump to some D2X's if that's the best option down the road (or hell a PhaseOne digital back or other brand) but right now i'm getting what I feel is the best stuff I can afford right now from canon. Now if I had started with the D70 and moved to a D2H instead of a 300D to a 1D I may just as well have been in nikon's camp. Ultimately the brand you shoot isn't all that important if they have all the features you need and are satisfied with the products they offer.
right now i'm partners with a guy who owns a nikon system, and there may be problems with that down the line... say extra costs because we can't share gear and have to buy both the nikon and canon version of things, but until it becomes a problem what does it matter? |

I went with Canon even after wanting so badly to own a Nikon becase at the time, I felt the 10D was so far ahead of the D100 that it warranted going to Canon. Nikon also left those of us with extensive collections of AI glass, far behind.

Canon Lover here.... Lower noise on Long exposures...the CMOS is better then the CCD for astrophotography and is highly recommended. I do lots of night work... In the daytime...Canon, Nikon...same Siht.
(I would like to add, Nikon is Very good with low noise...I and others are being super-critical!!!)

Sex.
Show that big white lens to the ladies, and, well, it's not G rated :O
I was Nikon in the film days, Fuji in the p&s digital era, and looked at all the options...nearly 2 years ago now.
So that was teh Fuji S2 at $1400 or was that $2400? Not in my budget. Forget sigma and kodak (sigma was too low res and kodak, well, kodak.)
That left Nikon and Canon (D70 or 300D or 20D) The was pre-D50 days. The D70 was tempting, but was about $300 more than the 300D, but it was $100-200 less than a 20D. Canon seemed to be progressive in their development of products, offer more products, and overall lenses were less expensive and more readily available used. Nikon has a better flash system but i didn't consider that at the time.
I liked the nikon colors a bit better in their images, but canon is a lot less noisy. I love nikon optics.
My last nikon litterly fell apart - pieces fell off of it. Most all the Canon products i'd used were very left brained (i am more right brained) so i felt like a PC user forced to use a Mac. So neither company had a clear advantage, but price and new products won me over to Canon.

My last film SLR was a Canon... the EOS Elan and I used that for many years (still have it) and I loved it. When I made the move to digital SLR it was a no brainer for me, especially when I held the 20D and felt how similar the controls were to the Elan. I've always been very happy with Canon cameras and equipment. Ironically, my first camera I got when I was 14 and was a Nikon "One Touch" 35mm point/shoot, and that took some really sharp pics. |

Years ago, when I really knew nothing about cameras, I wandered into a Best Buy and ending up buying an open box Rebel EOS X. And then I had a Canon Powershot G3 (okay, I briefly strayed to Kodak but that's not important). At that point, all I was reading about was Canon. It was "my" brand. Not necessarily for any kind of performance issues, just because it's what I knew. It only made sense to go Canon dslr when I thought it was time. |

Why did I choose Canon? Simple answer to that question is best answered by singing a bit from the famous Tina Turner song
*Simply the best, better than all the rest* :P
Seriously though, here in Iceland, Canon dominates the market so it´s easier to sell and buy Canon equipment, we have an repair center in country whereas Nikon has to be sent to Denmark I think (no camera for 1-3 weeks, whereas Canon means no camera for 1-3 days normally). Also, since Canon dominate the market here, almost everyone has a Canon system so borrowing equipment is much easier. That simple for me really.

When I was ready to buy a DSLR, the Canon 10d had been on the market for 6 or 7 months and the Rebel had just come out. Nikon didn't have anything that could come close to the quality of the 10d. The only other camera on the market was the Fuji S2 (I think). I can't remember if the Kodak was out yet or not, but it was out of my price range anyway.
I owned a Nikon 35mm body and a couple of lenses, but I went with Canon anyway.

Wish I could have gotten my Canon back in 1 to 3 weeks. Geez,my Canon has been in for repair for 6 weeks and I still do not have it back :(. Sent it off May 16th.
Just got a call last week with the estimate, said ok, and then they said "ok, we will get right on it" :0. Then they said it would be 7 to 10 days after that, and it was not a major repair either. |

No, unfortunately it was not under warrenty. I bent a pin in the card slot. The estimate to fix it was 179.00. I sure miss it. I am going on vacation soon and really need it back. Hope to get it back this week. Maybe tomorrow. I hope! |

I've been using Nikon digital for a while. My latest is a Coolpix 8700. When I decided to go dSLR, I did some research. Price vs performance Canon was the better choice. I got a sweet deal on my 300D, but also, the availability of good, second-hand Canon equipment far exceeds what can be found for Nikon.
I'm not brand loyal, Nikon or Canon, neither give a crap about me, so why should I them? I always tell people to buy what you need. Buy it from whomever fills your need at the best price.

I woulda tried to unbend it myself before paying $179! even if you broke it I'm sure they'd charge the same amount. |

In all my years of professional photography (late 60's onward), Nikon was THE 35mm professional system. In the beginning Canon was not really a factor. By the time I retired, Canon was becoming a serious player. But anyway I sold all my gear with the business.
When I started noodling with digital, I used a 4900Z Fuji, then a Coolpix 5800 (Nikon). Then I decided to go dSLR, and I did a ton of research, and the Canon 20D just seemed better to me than the D70 Nikon. For the icing on the cake, my local camera store is a Canon dealer; they don't even sell Nikon. They treat me real well, so it was an easy choice to make. It might not have been so easy if the D200 would have been available when I bought...

I started off with an old manual Olympus OM-10. However, I switched to Canon for my first electronic SLR because I was seduced by the potential for APS (the IX range). The features of APS were great (I got used to switching ISO films mid roll all the time, all my exposure information printed on the back of each image), but the quality of the images was grainy because of the smaller sized film over 35mm.
When I figured out how much better 35mm was for picture quality, I bought my EOS 50E (Elan) for the Eye Control (still used as backup) and another lens or two. And I finally consummated by desire for a digital SLR with the 20D (moving back to the 1.6 APS-C sized sensor, but now with all the quality I could wish for!).
