Driving home this afternoon it finally got on my nerves; Potholes! I have one street on the way home that I have to travel each day and it̢۪s like an obstacle course. Having to weave from one side of the road to the other as cars wait for their turn just to keep from hitting the potholes. So I propose a pothole challenge.
Details: Creatively photograph a pothole that could cause a hazard to you or other motorist. The street name, city, and state should be your title. Maybe some municipalities will see the challenge and understand they need to be fixed.

LMAO!
Unfortunately I live on the other side of town from the pothole covered roads. I'm not sure I want to make a special trip to photo potholes.
Ofcourse I could get lucky and have a hurricane hit right before the challenge starts.

What city do you live in that you have to go to the other side of town to find a pothole. :P
Here where I live we were rated (I think) in the top 3 of cities our size for the best roads. Yea Right! We also have house that range from "I will pay you to buy it" to $30,000,000.00 and you can find a pothole within a mile of the least to most expensive homes.
Come on we know DPC photographers take risk. Throw a light stick in the pothole and put a wine glass in front of it and you'll have a winner. If you get hit by a car you can listen to the DPC podcast while in the hospital for updates.

Haha.
Too bad I just moved - my old town had probably the worst roads in the country. Tons of fun! |

Ueah, dirt roads tend to smooth back out :-) hehe
No seriously, I live out on the edges of town in the county. Mobile county roads in general are a lot smoother than those in the city.

It's a pretty good idea - try and make the ordinary spcial.
A few years back I was driving down from my brothers to my parents. It's all backroad country - mostly blacktop but some nice dirt. For about 4 hours we would get the "DIP" signs and it would be the smoothest part of the road, so ended not even bothering to slow down. Got to one and could not see the road - I throw out the anchors big time from 140-ish kph and must have go down to 70kph by the time I left the blacktop and had to let go of the brakes - Dropped maybe 5 inches to the rough dirt and down the steepest DIP I have ever seen - no idea but obviously enough to bottom out the car and launch over the crest on the other side a bit in the air. To this day I think it used to be a bridge over a gully they removed for the day. I can see the AH putting out signs along the road and smiling as he puts out the same for this one as the other nothings before.... |

Potholes here in Michigan are extra bad this year. Our roads are notoriously bad anyway since the state does a half ass job of building them and a half ass job of maintaining them. Now add to that the extra harsh winter with a few extra freeze-thaw cycles and it's a disaster. Hit a pothole last week at 20 mph that blew out my front tire. The same day, a co worker lost a tire on his Ford Explorer and while he was putting on the spare, another driver blew out both front tires. Another co-worker blew out a tire, destroyed a wheel and broke a coil spring going about 20mph in front of the office. When I was at the tire store, getting my tire fixed, the guy helping me said they'd been busier than he could remember all week long mostly fixing blowouts from potholes. One woman there had hit a pothole and they had discovered the impact had broken a suspension link.

Not unless the ground under the roadway has been removed, as by a broken water main. Most potholes are just remnants of broken pavement, pieces of which have been dislodged/displaced by passing traffic and/or flooding.
I have a classic I have to dodge every morning on my way to work -- I'm sure if we hurry up and schedule this the city will fix that hole in a hurry just to spite me ...
FWIW a sinkhole recently swallowed most of a classic Corvette museum, with a probable loss of at least six vehicles ...

The vast majority of potholes here are caused by frost heave driven by the freeze/thaw cycle. Water seeps into a crack, freezes and expands then more water seeps in, freezes and expands until the pavement breaks up and chunks become dislodged.
As to the Corvette museum, they have a plan to recover all of the cars and despite the museum being a private enterprise, GM has pledged to repair all 8 Corvettes. |

Sounds like a good challenge, but please change the wording to get "motorist" out of it. Potholes can also be hazards to cyclists.
In fact, I photographed one about a year ago that was a "stealth" pothole. The coloration and shape made it nearly invisible until I hit it on my bike, but it wasn't in the way of cars. I reported it to the city, sent them the pics, and they patched it within the week.

People in the Houston area will have plenty to choose from. I've never seen potholes like I saw in Houston. They were everywhere and were huge! You couldn't drive 10 feet without hitting one, and you couldn't swerve, because you'd just hit another one. |
