Looks like a Kestrel. Use to be called the Sparrow Hawk until they discovered it was a Falcon and renamed it the American Kestrel. Not sure what the Kestrels of other nationalities think of that. Here are a few comparative photos.

I'm thinking it might be a Cooper Hawk. They do have yellow around the eyes but I can't be certain its really a Cooper.

Maybe its just a species variation or due to age or sex. Was it Dove size or smaller. All the rest of the hawks/falcons I know are significantly larger. |

Yeah, was very small. Smallest hawk/falcon I've ever seen, that's why I took so many shots of it.

Cooper Hawks are small. Theyare about the same size as a small pigeon. They have squared tails and are colored very similar to the pics you show.

Scrum's is the American Kestrel, yours is "just" a Common Kestrel (Falco Tinnunculus). Common over here at least! Beautiful little birds, I love 'em.

Here is a mature Coopers Hawk
and a mature Sharp Shin Hawk
Sometimes the immature Coopers is mistaken for the adult Sharp Shin.
Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread. |

Cindi,
The bird is a European Kestrel, Falco tinnunclus. I thought so, but wasn't sure if it was an immature female American or not. Van |
