i saw the shadow instantly, but i've always liked the work of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, so perhaps i was primed.

i hope you don't mind, but i did a little fiddling with it. i think part of the problem was the light on the still life was so harsh that it drew the eye there insted of to the shadow. i used a gothic glow action to make the fruit and veg. more painterly and subtle, and added vignetting to darken the corners.

i hope i haven't caused offence doing this.

I was working on a variation like that too :-) Lots of Gothic Glow. I sort of like it, but decided to stick with one that was more faithful to his original. Nice take on it!

I thought the meaning of the shadow in this shot was pretty obvious, but then a few people commented that it took them some while to get it. So I wonder whether there were some people who looked at the shot briefly during voting, saw the still life, saw the shadow, but did not "decode" its second meaning.

I noticed it and felt it was clever. However I did feel the fruit in front competed with the Shadow and was a bit distracting. But because of the creativity and execution I gave it a 7. I did not feel like the shot need to be marked down because of the distraction but I would of marked it up if the fruit would of been toned down.

Lev,

Saw it, liked it, and gave it a high mark considering the theme of the challenge. Outside of a shadow challenge my score likely goes from a 9 to a 7. I felt the creativity outweighed the harshness of the lighting on the fruit.

I got it right away too. Gave me a sweet chuckle so I gave it an 8. =)
