Hey all, i know there's probably a post like this every couple of days, but I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped me out with all my questions over the last weeks. I finally made the plunge and bought the dSLR :D ended up spending $AUD1500 for everything but the 50mm 1.8 lens (which was $170 at a different store). but i also get a 10% refund on top of that :D.

the package that i got:

Canon 350D body
Canon 18-55mm kit lens
Canon 75-300mm el cheapo lens :P
Hoya circular polariser
Lowepro camera bag/case

but unfortunately that store didn't have the 50mm 1.8 in stock, so i spent $170 on a Canon 50mm f1.8 next door :P. Also got a 1gb CF card off ebay for $50, and i already have a tripod, so I'm all ready to go huntin pics :)

Also going to Sri Lanka in a week, so i get to claim back GST (10% discount basically, i.e. about $170 refund). Will have to start reading up on travel photography now hehe.

Thanks all for the help again, and hopefully you'll see heaps of great pics from me in the challenges :D

PS. do you guys think its worth getting the extended warranty for another 2yrs?

I wouldn't have gone with either lens choices...you could have used the money on a tamron 28-75 and actually have a high quality lens to go with that high quality camera.

Just my .02

I have been looking, and am considering pretty much the same setup you purchased, although I'm still looking at different main lens options. I'll almost definitely get the 50mm though. I was quoted the same price, so I don't think you "waaaay overpaid". Remember, sammigurl that this is AUD, not USD. :) Maybe some bargains are available, but it sounds like you paid fair retail price for it. Hey, the GST refund pays for the 50mm lens anyway. :)

Sounds like a great deal on the rest of the package, so you did well overall, and you'll have a great setup. Have fun in Sri Lanka - it's a great place for photos. I recently visited Negombo for work.

I'll be interested to hear your experience of moving from a P&S to SLR, so I know what to expect when I make the move in a month or two. :)

have been playing with the camera today, and i have to say, it's quite nice to be able to have full control over the camera, as opposed to my old automatic p/s where i had to always find ways to trick it into doing the settings i wanted :P

surfdabbler: the upgrade is definately nice, and i reccomend it :) ... also, just wondering if you know particularly good spots in lanka for photos? i'll be in colombo area mostly, but also plan to travel around for a little bit. any areas in negombo good?

specialk: i appreciate the comment, but the reason i went for those lenses is i have the 50mm as a "quality" lens, and as i'm still a beginner, i wanted to have the entire range covered, so that i can slowly learn, and decide where in the range i ought to spend big $$ later :)

Yeh, but not as bad as it sounds. $170 AU is like $125 US right now

That's still a fair bit... I paid 75 USD for mine...

Other lenses worth considering are the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and the Sigma 70-300 f/4.0-5.6 APO DG Macro II.

Sort of a moot point after the fact though...

THe 50mm will get you nice quality pics.

Just watch your focus!!! highly critical for that lens...
