I've come to realise that 'the voters are always right', so I'm not complaining about my score.
I'm just curious as to what it was about this image that netted 23 votes of 3 and under (53 of 4 and under).
Any and all commnet welcome.

same reason you got 25 votes of an 8 or higher ... some people vote using the extremes of the scale. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

| It's a photo that relies heavily on the title for the comedic impact. DPCers generally frown upon too strong a reliance on the title. More generally, the REAL explanation for why you got that many low votes is the simple rule of distribution - your voting histogram is a pretty good normal curve. You have a small sub-peak at one and at ten, but otherwise, very normal statistical distribution of votes. |

I left you a comment also. I really don't see it as a three and you captured the expression well.

I gave it a 7!
I laughed out loud, (really) when I saw it.
You do have a normal bell curve. The tails are intersting. The "7" ones are off set by the "6" 10s! |

Thanks for the swift and helpful responses. I can see now that I was probably thinking my glass was half empty, when in fact it was half full!
Funny how statistics can help that way sometimes :-) |

I think it's because people didn't think you met the challenge, since you are showing people reacting to an unexpected find, instead of the unexpected find itself. I enjoyed the switch, but many at dpc are literalists. Personally, I thought you met the challenge better than the ribbon winners did.

As far as scoring goes, I think that's the reason: to many people this doesn't really meet "unexpected find" head-on. But looking at the image immediately conjured up an amusing scenario in my mind:
The lady on the cell phone is trying to locate a friend of theirs in the crowd, who also has a cell phone. So she's talking on hers to the friend, while they both are squinting and the friend is trying to attract their attention...
It's a good shot :-) Well seen!

Thanks for the feedback Bear. I must confess that the point you mention above never occured to me. I assumed that people 'discovering' something would automatically meet the challenge.
Live and learn. Maybe I should should start thinking INSIDE the box :-)
As soon as I realised this was an issue I began to wish I'd taken a shot of a baby in a basket amongst some reeds and called it 'Holy Moses!' |

Hmmmm... lets see... picture is in good focus, lighting is OK, background is not distracting and it does not appear staged. In fact, it appears to be an excellent candid capture.
Some people are finicky and might think the perspective and framing was boring and that it had a snapshot look so scored it like that but there are likely few who thought that.
Some people might think that if you go to a race of this nature that you would expect to find pictures like this so it would not be an "unexpected find".
Bear_music's suggestion is right on the mark!

Please don't start thinking inside the box, it's awfully crowded in there. It's a very funny shot, you should be pleased with yourself. Trust your instincts and pay no attention to the voter behind the curtain ;-) |

| I too was surprised when I saw the voting for my first ever submission and it had some 1's and 2's. I got quite discouraged for a while but you guys are right - the contra is that I also got some 9's and 10's so I guess it even's out. I'll try again :) |

Instead of looking at those 23 votes of 3 and under - look at the fact the you had 197 votes 5 or above - not all bad.

| Good point shutterpuig ... I always think that celebrating the good over letting to negative get to me works much more in the favour of the photographer ... PS I thought this was a great capture .. almost see no evil hear no evil ish :) |

I see I gave it a 5, so I'm safely ensconced among the faceless throng. I think a) I was voting pretty lazily, and b) I couldn't see the unexpected thing.
Now that we've stepped back, I see the flaws in my judgement and especially my judgement strategy. It's a great kodak moment and so well composed as to seem set up (which cuts both ways, I suppose).
It was worth more, but I can't honestly say I'd do better if it all happened again. If I do, it's because you've enabled a bit of learning. Thanks. |
